Purcell clears waivers, will be assigned to Ontario

Teddy Purcell, waived by the team on Saturday, has cleared waivers and will be assigned to AHL-Ontario, according to hockey operations. (UPDATE: He has been assigned to Ontario, and Andy Andreoff has been activated from injured reserve.)

The Kings had looked at potential trade partners for Purcell, and I’m under the impression that there had been some talks with one team, but as Elliotte Friedman noted, there might be some difficulties navigating Purcell’s cap hit. Via CapFriendly, exactly half the league wouldn’t be able to fit in Purcell’s remaining daily cap hit, which is $1.128-million as of Sunday. Purcell was signed to a one-year, $1.6-million contract on July 1 and has two assists in 12 games.

Once the Kings officially assign Purcell to Ontario, a roster spot opens up for Andy Andreoff, who has been cleared to play after recovering from thumb surgery following an injury he had suffered while attempting to make a hit during a game in Chicago on October 30. With Purcell’s AHL assignment, Los Angeles will recoup $950,000 in cap space.

The Kings host the Montreal Canadiens at 12:00 p.m. today. The game is an earlier-than-usual start to fit in the Clippers-Pacers game, which begins at 6:30 p.m.
