The Kings have recalled defenseman Rob Scuderi from the Ontario Reign (AHL), the team announced on Monday.
The move comes in the wake of Brayden McNabb (upper-body) being placed injured reserve prior to Sunday’s loss to the Blackhawks. McNabb was injured on Saturday against St. Louis in an offensive zone collision with Blues defenseman Colton Parayko.
The 37-year-old Scuderi was placed on waivers on Oct. 10 and upon clearing, was assigned to the Ontario Reign. Although Scuderi has been a rostered player for the Reign, he has not appeared in any of their six contests and did not travel with the team on its three-game road trip to Texas last weekend. As a result, Scuderi has not played in any regular season contests this season. Scuderi, who resides in the South Bay, had worked out a schedule with Reign head coach Mike Stothers to allow him to work out at the Kings’ facility in El Segundo if necessary and commute other days to Ontario for practice.
Scuderi is in his second go-round with the Los Angeles organization after being acquired in February 2016 in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks for defenseman Christian Ehrhoff. In 783 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Chicago and Los Angeles, the two-time Stanley Cup champ with the Kings and Penguins has 8 goals and 102 assists for 110 points, a plus-25 rating and 198 penalty minutes.
Via CapFriendly, the Kings have $102,620 of projected cap space remaining with the addition of Scuderi. With such minimal cap space, it is possible that secondary moves to allow the Kings to maneuver around the salary cap could come in the near future.
