The good-news, bad-news situation persists for the Kings’ special teams. The power play continues to be staggeringly bad, with six goals in the last 23 games, but the penalty kill remains excellent. The Kings have killed 34 consecutive penalties (the franchise record is 46) and have killed 81 of their last 84 penalties. The Kings went 6-for-6 on the penalty kill Saturday, although Columbus scored its goal just six seconds after a Kings penalty expired. In all, the Kings faced 10 minutes, 48 seconds, of penalty-kill time, and 13 of their 18 skaters got at least one shift on the penalty kill (everyone but Trent Hunter, Andrei Loktionov, Alec Martinez, Brad Richardson and Kevin Westgarth). Darryl Sutter said that wasn’t just a product of circumstance.
SUTTER: “I’m trying to get some more players involved in it, because it might help us in 5-on-5, if we can lessen the load, killing penalties. Last night was a little bit of an aberration, because (penalty killing) is all it was. … You watch and review the game. During the game, you’re complaining about penalties, but they were pretty much penalties. Maybe they were told to tighten it up a little again. I don’t know. The only one I didn’t like was the one they called on Willy, because they were holding his stick and he gets called for the old forearm shiver, or whatever you want to call it. That’s the only one I didn’t like, but that’s going to happen too.’’
