Game 32: Red Wings 8, Kings 2 (FINAL)

It’s been a cold, snowy day in Detroit. Can the Kings and Red Wings heat things up on the ice? All the action will be on Fox Sports West and on 1150-AM and affiliates, with all the game updates here as well…

THIRD PERIOD
In goal: It’s still Bernier against Howard.
Red Wings 7, Kings 2: Detroit’s seventh goal came 7:34 into the third period. Dan Cleary forced the puck away from Jack Johnson behind the Kings’ net, and centered it toward Drew Miller, who beat Bernier from close range for his second goal of the game. The Kings had not allowed seven goals in a game since Feb. 28 of last season, in a 7-4 loss to the Red Wings.
Red Wings 8, Kings 2: Brad Stuart made it a six-goal game with a power-play goal with 8:42 remaining in the third period. With Tomas Holmstrom parked in front of Bernier, Stuart sent a high shot past Bernier from the top of the circle. Cory Emmerton and Niklas Kronwall got assists. The Kings had not allowed eight goals in a game since an 8-6 loss to Boston on Oct. 12, 2007.

SECOND PERIOD
In goal: It’s still Bernier against Howard.
Red Wings 4, Kings 2: The Kings pulled back within two goals with 8:57 remaining in the second period. Dustin Penner, near the boards, passed to Justin Williams. Williams’ shot was saved but the puck stayed in the crease. Jarret Stoll fought off two Red Wings and knocked the rebound past Howard.
Red Wings 5, Kings 2: Once again, the two-goal margin didn’t last long, as the Red Wings regained their three-goal lead just 1:03 after Stoll’s goal. Henrik Zetterberg scored a highlight-reel goal, as he cut to the net and lifted a backhand shot over Bernier’s shoulder from a tight angle to the side of the net. Jiri Hudler and Niklas Kronwall got assists. The Kings have allowed five goals in a game for the first time this season. They have not scored six goals in a game this season.
Red Wings 6, Kings 2: Detroit made it a four-goal game with 21.6 seconds remaining in the second period. Pavel Datsyuk went to the front of the net all alone, then tapped a centering pass from Johan Franzen past Bernier. Todd Bertuzzi also got an assist.
End of period: Through two periods, shots are 19-16 in favor of the Kings. Michigan-native defensemen Jack Johnson and Alec Martinez are both minus-3 tonight.

FIRST PERIOD
In goal: It’s the Kings’ Jonathan Quick against the Red Wings’ Jimmy Howard.
Red Wings 1, Kings 0: The Red Wings scored goals 15 seconds apart in the first two minutes of the game. First, Jack Johnson made an awkward neutral-zone pass to Trevor Lewis. The puck deflected off Lewis’ stick, and Danny Cleary took it the other way. Cleary passed to Darren Helm, who then centered the puck to Drew Miller, who tapped it in from close range at the 1:45 mark.
Red Wings 2, Kings 0: Just 15 seconds later, Detroit struck out. Quick stopped up the puck at the goal line, but that only served to leave it for Tomas Holmstrom. Holmstrom centered the puck to Jonathan Ericsson, and Holmstrom’s shot got deflected by Cody Emmerton past Quick.
Red Wings 3, Kings 0: Quick got pulled in favor of Jonathan Bernier after the Red Wings scored their third goal, on seven shots, at the 8:32 mark. Niklas Kronwall shot from just inside the top of the circle, with Dan Cleary buzzing the front of the net, and the high shot beat Quick. Cleary and Darren Helm got assists. Quick was pulled from a game for the first time this season.
Red Wings 3, Kings 1: For the first time in seven games, the Kings got a first-period goal, and Davis Drewiske got a goal for the second consecutive game. Drewiske started the play when he kept the puck in the Detroit zone at the left point. Dustin Penner passed to Justin Williams, who then found Drewiske at the top of the left circle. Drewiske’s wrist shot beat Howard with 2:45 remaining in the first period.
Red Wings 4, Kings 1: The Kings’ momentum lasted less than two minutes, as the Red Wings got their three-goal lead back with 1:25 remaining in the period. Justin Abdelkader passed to Cody Emmerton, and Emmerton’s shot from the slot appeared to deflect off Alec Martinez’s skate before it beat Bernier. Tomas Holmstrom also got an assist.
End of period: The Kings actually outshot the Red Wings 10-9 in the period. The Kings went 0-for-1 on the power play and did not face a penalty kill.
