The view from Dallas

The Kings had been 3-0-1 in their previous four home games against Dallas, and the Stars had allowed five goals in each of their last two games. Well, neither one of those things went the Kings’ way Saturday night in their 2-1 loss. For a second consecutive game, the Kings allowed a rookie goalie to win his first NHL start, with Richard Bachman getting the honor for Dallas. Here’s a look at The Dallas Morning News’ blog for coverage of last night’s game, followed by some additional postgame quotes from the Stars’ locker room…

COACH GLEN GULUTZAN
(on the game…) “I thought our power play struggled mightily there in the beginning. It wasn’t actually in the zone, we didn’t win any faceoffs and then we couldn’t get in, and then we changed our breakout a little bit and got in. I thought the last two or three power plays generated chances and shots but just nothing went in. It’s a thing that, if we can get that thing going, we’d save ourselves some energy. … That fourth line played well. … We have to utilize everybody. If you look at teams like Minnesota and everybody, they’re doing the same thing. We have to utilize that and guys have to embrace that. That’s the sell for us.’’

(on goaltender Richard Bachman…) “He’s a competitive guy and he’s pretty clean when it comes to rebounds and I thought he had a real good start for us. … He looked like himself. I just told him when he went out there, it’s the same game that you’ve been playing. He has that ability. … He’s going through the natural progression. He’s a good goaltender. … He deserves another start, and most likely against the Rangers we’ll give him that opportunity and see if he can run with it.’’

RICHARD BACHMAN
(on his first NHL start…) “I got a phone call last night, just after dinnertime, just letting me know what the plan was for today. … You always dream about getting that first win and it was a dream come true tonight.’’

(on limiting rebounds…) “That’s what I try and do. It really helps the D out, and helps me out, to know where the puck is going to be. (It) is so much easier and a lot cleaner that way. The rebounds I did have, the D did an awesome job for me tonight.’’

JAMIE BENN
(on his goal…) I had a few games there that was a tough stretch. … It kind of gave me some confidence. … It was a lucky goal but why not take it?’’

(on Richard Bachman…) “He looked pretty calm back there for his first real start. … He really played a great game and got a big two points for us. … He prepared well tonight and played a great game.’’
