Day 1, Insiders!
It’s the start of the draft, officially, but not the start of draft activity. The Kings have already made a trade today, swapping the 21st overall pick, their first-round selection, with Montreal in exchange for picks 26, 57 and 198. The Kings are still slated to pick today, just five spots later than they were originally slotted to. They also recoup the second-round selection they traded away last summer as well as a late pick.
For the draft as a whole, here’s what the Kings are working with entering the two-day event.
Round 1, Pick 26
Round 2, Pick 57
Round 4, Pick 118
Round 6, Pick 182
Round 7, Pick 198
Round 7, Pick 214
Lots of options and the Kings are still down picks in the third and fifth rounds, though they have an extra seventh after this morning’s trades. Plenty of options at their disposal and a ton of flexibility to make further moves if they should choose. Ideally, the Kings would still love o add a third-round selection to recoup the one they sent to Buffalo for goaltender Erik Portillo. A well-spent pick, but if the Kings could get that pick back in one form or another, it would really round out their draft haul. A big step towards that this morning for sure. More to come throughout the evening as we potentially add the newest member of the Kings organization.
