2022 – The Year of Trevor……….and Moore. A Look Back on 2022 As The Calendar Flips.

21 Goals, 39 Assists, 60 Points.

From just over 82 games played, that was the stat line of Thousand Oaks native Trevor Moore in the 2022 calendar year. And what a year it’s been.

The start could not have been much faster, or much better. Placed on a line with Phillip Danault and Viktor Arvidsson for the first time, Moore picked up his first point of 2022 just 12 seconds into the first game of the new year, an assist on Arvidsson’s game-opening goal in an eventual 6-3 win over the Flyers. That game turned out to the be the start of something special, as Moore tallied four points (1-3-4) in the victory, with the line combining for 11 points in total. That line would remain intact for the rest of the season and we know exactly where things have gone from there.

From that point on, Moore paced the Kings in scoring the rest of the way home in 2021-22. With 41 points from 49 games, no LA player had more points, with his 27 assists two shy of Anze Kopitar’s team lead in that category. What was perhaps more impressive was that 40 of his points came at either even strength or while shorthanded, one of just 23 players around the NHL to hit that mark in the 2022 portion of last season. Moore also led the NHL with four shorthanded goals and five shorthanded points in that stretch. When evaluating the calendar year as a whole, Moore has five shorthanded goals and six shorthanded points, both tied for the NHL lead in that span. In overall scoring, Moore was one of four Kings players with 60 or more points in 2022, joining his most frequent linemates – Danault and Arvidsson – as well as Kopitar, who led the team with 68 points in 2022.

Though I suppose the year is technically not ending on the highest of notes for Moore – he’s currently sidelined with an injury that has kept him out of the last two games – the biggest news of his December came two weeks ago, when he committed his future to the Kings organization for the long haul. Moore inked a five-year extension, carrying a cap hit of $4.2 million per season, cementing his place within the organization that he’s worked so hard to earn over the last 12 months.

A good year of Trevor, and the hope is that 2022 is just the best one yet, not the best to come.

90 games was tied for the most that the Kings have played in a single calendar year in franchise history (2013). That total was set during a lockout impacted season that saw a condensed schedule, so that tells you how backloaded the Kings were a season ago and how frontloaded this season’s schedule has been.

From 2021 to 2022, the Kings improved by 28 points in the standings, jumping from 84 to 112. The Kings scored 55 more goals in 2022. The most consistent area for the team was in the faceoff dot, which saw a minute rise by 0.1%, with the team ranking eighth in the league in both seasons.

Individually speaking, the Kings had five players with 40 or more points in 2021, with that number increasing to six in 2022. Point totals were vastly higher, however, as five of those six players exceeded 50 points, compared to just two players in 2021. The Kings also had six, 20-goal scorers in 2022, up from four in 2021, with Gabe Vilardi reaching the mark in Colorado on Thursday. Kevin Fiala was well ahead of those totals, but only has his 2022-23 statistics with the Kings.

The Kings have not traditionally been a team with high-scoring individuals, but several players found their way onto leaguewide Top 10’s and honors through their play. Seeing Drew Doughty among the time-on-ice leaders is never a surprise – he’s the all-time leader in average TOI among players with at least 200 career games played. Other leaders like Trevor Moore’s shorthanded goals, Anze Kopitar’s prowess in the faceoff dot or Viktor Arvidsson’s volume shooting aren’t necessarily surprising, but it’s still encouraging to see them place highly on the leaderboard.

As we look ahead, Insiders, the first day of 2023 is an off day, with the Kings scheduled to return to the ice tomorrow at 11 AM. The Kings saw their seven-game point streak snapped yesterday afternoon, against the Philadelphia Flyers, on a New Year’s Eve matinee game, a performance that the group believed should have been better.

Yesterday was also defenseman Alex Edler’s 1,000th career NHL game. Though he’s played just 75 of those games with the Kings, Edler has made an impact on several of his younger teammates in a short time with the organization. More on that to come later on this afternoon.
