February 4: Bus Texts with Stothers

Today’s Bus Texts with Stothers comes as the Reign return back from San Diego after suffering their first shutout of the season.

San Diego 2, Reign 0
Antoine Laganiere scored twice in the third period and the Gulls dropped the Reign in back-to-back nights, this one taking place in San Diego on Saturday night. After two scoreless periods Laganiere broke through at 7:30 of the third on the power play as a rebound of a Corey Tropp shot found his stick for an easy tap in. The opening goal came on San Diego’s sixth and final power play opportunity of the game, a man advantage that came less than a minute after the Reign had previously killed off a Brett Sutter boarding call. The Gulls forward scored again off a Zac Leslie turnover, blasting a slap shot from the left wing that got through Jack Campbell at 12:54. Ontario’s power play, ranked second in the league, had a lackluster night in going 0-for-5, including a failed four-minute power play in the second period. Many times the Reign power play found it challenging to even enter the zone against a Gulls team that continued on with an 11-game point streak. With the loss the Reign dropped to second in the Pacific behind San Jose.

BUS TEXTS WITH STOTHERS
ORI: Did you feel like the effort was there tonight or was this just an off night completely? It especially seemed like the power play wasn’t in sync.
Stothers: We were not even close to being worthy of winning a hockey game today. We will get back to work on Monday.
ORI: With that point in mind what did you feel was missing and what will the focus be this week with the chance to get back to work?
Stothers: Refocus, execution, pace, intensity, work smart, discipline, DZ, NZ, OZ, Special teams, scoring, passing, skating, shooting….the basics!!!
ORI: You’re having to face San Diego quite a bit now this weekend and next weekend too. Does it feel like the rivalry is ramping back up against after being somewhat more lax at the beginning of the season?
Stothers: Hard to feel any rivalry vibe after watching that one.
ORI: Fair enough.
