Live blog: Reign host Gulls in preseason Game 1

Greetings from CBBA, where the Reign are hosting an Education Day game with a 10 a.m. start against the Gulls. You can listen live here.

–First off, a lot of familiar names for the Reign are scratched today: Brett Sutter, Zach Leslie, Paul Bissonnette, Sean Backman, T.J. Hensick (signed in offseason), Mike Amadio, Andrew Crescenzi, Jonny Brodzinski, Sam Herr, Joel Lowry and Justin Auger. Of note, Zach Trotman, who recently cleared waivers, is playing, as well as captain Vincent LoVerde. Goalies Jack Campbell and Thomas McCollum are scratched as well.

Here’s what things look like for Ontario:

–Familiar names on the other side of the ice are former Ontario players Jeff Schultz, Jordan Samuels-Thomas and Scott Sabourin.

FIRST PERIOD
20:00 – Jack Flinn in goal for Ontario, Matt Hackett for Gulls.
19:59 – We’re underway.
19:42 – Jeff Schultz for SD with the first shot of the game. Flinn has it.
15:58 – Erick Cernak’s shot from the point is the Reign’s first on goal.
14:45 – Flinn denies Megna from the slot with blocker save. Best chance of the game so far.
13:16 – ONT penalty, Cernak for hooking. Helped deny scoring chance, so worth the trouble.
11:16 – Reign at full strength.
7:29 – Reign’s Ben Walker shoots from right circle, it gets through Hackett’s equipment but drops at side of net. Just Ontario’s 2nd SOG so far.
4:17 – Zach Trotman shaken up on hit along near boards by Andrew O’Brien and goes right after O’Brien in front of Reign net. After shift he heads to the tunnel briefly, then returns to Reign bench.
1:46 – ONT penalty, Ward for tripping.
:18 – SAN DIEGO GOAL: Noesen from slot redirects Morley pass past Flinn on power play.
END OF FIRST: San Diego 1, Ontario 0
SOG – SD 13, ONT 5; Reign 1-1 on PK.

SECOND PERIOD
19:28 – ONTARIO GOAL: Cory Ward goes five-hole on Hackett from the slot. Pass came from behind net by Daniel Ciampini. 1-1 here.
17:23 – SAN DIEGO GOAL: Right off a faceoff in the Reign zone, Roy from inside left circle beats Flinn glove side. 2-1 San Diego.
14:55 – SD penalty, Keaton Thompson for high-sticking. Reign’s first power play today coming up.
12:55 – Gulls have a strong penalty kill and the Reign fail to have much zone time. SD back at full strength.
12:32 – Media timeout and LoVerde’s in a huddle with younger guys talking and pointing his finger this way and that way. Captain at work.
(About) 10:00 – Goalie swap for both sides. Jonah Imoo in for Reign and Kevin Boyle for Gulls.
8:17 – Gulls’ Kase slips by Sharipzianov at blue line but Sharipzianov shows some nice hustle getting back to break up what would have been a 2-on-1.
7:52 – SAN DIEGO GOAL: Noesen again right in Imoo’s crease after a Reign turnover. 3-1 Gulls.
5:33 – Reign’s Ward coughs up puck, setting up quality chance for Tarnasky, but Imoo slides over for the save.
4:45 – SD’s Kase on a break but Erik Cernak rushes back just in time to get a piece of Kase’s stick as he came in alone on Imoo.
2:27 – SD penalty, Roy for tripping.
:27 – A much, much better power play for the Ontario with sustained zone time. No goal to show for it, though.

THIRD PERIOD
16:12 – Back after a quick intermission chat with Jonny Brodzinski, who recently changed his jersey number to 22. More on that later. Most of the non-dressed Reign “veterans” are now watching from the stands after a workout this morning.
14:55 – LoVerde drops Kase, practically WWE-style after the two were battling through neutral ice.
10:33 – Media timeout.
10:31 – ONTARIO GOAL: Lucas Lessio scores from the right circle after a faceoff win by Patrick Bjorkstrand. 3-2 Gulls.
10:04 – Finally the first fight of the game and for this rivalry early in the season. Trotman takes on Tarnasky, but it’s over quickly. SD tough guy Bickel was trying to get in the mix as well.
10:04 – Penalties sort out and it’s Trotman and Tarnasky both for fighting and Lessio gets a 2-min roughing minor.
8:04 – Reign back at full strength.
6:25 – The Gulls’ O’Brien lines up Reign D-man Alex Privitera with a hard hit near Gulls bench.
5:50 – Sharipzianov with a good stick to help break up a Gulls scoring chance attempt.
4:28 – ONTARIO GOAL: Miles Koules scores at goal mouth after a heads-up play from behind net by Alex Guptill. Guptill made backhanded pass facing boards to get it to Koules. 3-3. This is so an Ontario-San Diego game now.
2:22 – Goalie Jonah Imoo stops San Diego regular Corey Tropp with a glove save in close.
1:37 – Icing San Diego. Kopitar (Gasper that is), in on the face-off.
:38 – Imoo sees Megna’s shot from left point right into his glove.

OVERTIME
4:25 – LoVerde gets pass from Ward on 2-on-1, dekes and puts it into Boyle’s chest.
3:22 – Lintuniemi stops Noesen in 1-on-1 battle.
2:11 – Imoo makes a glove save in tight on Roy with Gulls buzzing for quite some time in Reign zone.
:53 – Trotman slap shot from inside right circle denied.
:32 – Daniel Ciampini steals puck near Reign blue line and races in on breakaway but misses.
