Game 58: Coyotes 1, Kings 0 (FINAL)

It’s a rare appearance at Staples Center for the Kings, who host the Phoenix Coyotes in one of only four February home games. All the action is on Fox Sports West and on 1150-AM and affiliates, with all the game updates here as well…

THIRD PERIOD
In goal: It’s still Quick vs. Smith.
End of period: After a scoreless period, including a late power play, the Kings suffered their seventh shutout of the season and fell behind Phoenix, into eighth place in the Western Conference and only two points ahead of ninth-place Calgary.

SECOND PERIOD
In goal: It’s still Quick vs. Smith.
Coyotes 1, Kings 0: Phoenix broke the scoreless tie with a power-play goal with 4:01 remaining in the period. The Coyotes spent most of the power play in the Kings’ zone, with a series of short, accurate passes, and finally, Ray Whitney’s cross-ice pass found Radim Vrbata, who shot and scored from the right circle. Keith Yandle also got an assist.
End of period: The Kings outshot the Coyotes 8-5 in the period. The Kings did not have a power play and went 1-for-3 on the penalty kill.

FIRST PERIOD
Officials: Mike Leggo, Chris Rooney (referees); Shane Heyer, Brad Lazarowich (linesmen).
In goal: It’s the Kings’ Jonathan Quick against the Coyotes’ Mike Smith.
End of period: The Coyotes won the penalty-minute battle, 21-19. There were three fights and two roughing penalties, and the action all started after a hit by Dustin Brown took Rostislav Klesla out of the game less than five minutes into the period. The Kings outshot the Coyotes 11-6. The Kings went 0-for-2 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.
