In Saturday night’s season opener, the Kings played in the purple-and-gold jerseys that defined the franchise from the late 1960s until the late 1980s. On Sunday, the Kings took the opportunity to honor one of their greats from that era.
Charlie Simmer, a member of the Kings’ “Triple Crown Line” with Marcel Dionne and Dave Taylor, was presented with Anze Kopitar’s game-worn No. 11 vintage jersey. Simmer wore No. 11 with the Kings from 1977-85.
Simmer tied for the league lead with 56 goals in 1979-80, a season in which he set an NHL record by scoring at least one goal in 13 consecutive games. Simmer still ranks seventh in Kings history with 222 career goals and ninth with 466 points. For more information about Simmer’s career, click here.
Now a color analyst for Canadian TV network Sportsnet, Simmer was presented with the jersey by Kopitar and team captain Dustin Brown at the Saddledome this afternoon. Kopitar told Simmer that it was “an honor” to wear the number Simmer wore with the Kings.
“No. 11 has gotten a lot faster and a lot more talented,” Simmer said after Kopitar handed him the jersey.
