The Manchester Monarchs beat the Hershey Bears 3-2 in overtime in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Hershey leads the series 2-1, with Game 4 to be played Tuesday in Manchester. Justin Azevedo scored the game-winning goal for the Monarchs 2:43 into overtime, with an assist to Dwight King, and Jonathan Bernier got the win by stopping 23 of 25 shots.
The Monarchs had to rally from a 2-0 third-period deficit. Hershey’s Alexandre Giroux scored a power-play goal with 2:34 remaining in the first period, and Mathieu Perrault made it 2-0 when he scored 3:55 into the third period. The Monarchs made it 2-1 less than two minutes later, though, when John Zeiler scored (with an assist to Jake Muzzin) at the 5:44 mark, and Andrei Loktionov tied the game at the 7:22 mark with assists from Thomas Hickey and Drew Bagnall.
This is the first time in Monarchs history that they have won a game in the conference finals. Their only other trip to the conference finals came in 2007, when they were swept by Hershey in four games.
