FREDRIK MODIN
This season: 20 games (with Kings), 3 goals, 2 assists, 14 penalty minutes, 14:55 average ice time.
The good: Expectations were low when the Kings acquired Modin from Columbus, for a conditional seventh-round draft pick, at the trade deadline. Modin, a former 30-goal scorer, had been slowed significantly by injury over the previous two seasons, but with the Kings, Modin displayed a surprisingly strong two-way game and saved his best work for the playoffs, when he scored three goals in six games.
The bad: Modin did solid work for the Kings, but he turns 36 in October and has a history of recent injuries. He’s an intelligent player and a good teammate, but he has slowed down considerably from his peak, and his speed is unlikely to do anything but decrease more.
Going forward: Modin is an unrestricted free agent this summer, and he did a credible job late in the season on the “stopper line” with Michal Handzus, but unless the Kings feel they lack a better option within the organization — which is rather unlikely — Modin’s return next season would seem to be a longshot.
