Numbers game

A couple sites pop up, at this time of year, giving odds for NHL teams to make the playoffs, etc. The one that appears to be the most comprehensive, sportsclubstats.com, gives the Kings a 99.6-percent chance of making the playoffs this season. It also gives the Kings a 50-percent chance of earning the No. 4 seed in the playoffs, ahead of Phoenix (34 percent) and Colorado (10 percent).

Another site, playoffstatus.com, makes further projects, and projects a greater than 99 percent chance that the Kings will make the playoffs. It gives them a 51-percent chance of making the second round, a 21-percent chance of reaching the conference finals, a 10-percent chance of reaching the Stanley Cup Finals and a 4-percent chance of winning the Stanley Cup.

What does it all mean? Absolutely nothing, in reality, but it’s sort of fun to track along the way. Think of it another way… If the Kings go 8-8 in their final 16 games, Detroit — as the current No. 9 team — would have to go 12-3 in its final 15 games to pass the Kings.
