Prospect Playoff Update – Jared Woolley to Round 3, Liam Greentree’s Playoff Run Ends, Slukynsky To Worlds

And then there was one.

The Kings had four prospects in the OHL playoffs when the 2024-25 postseason began and after two full rounds have been completed, one prospect remains. Second-year OHL defenseman Jared Woolley of the top seeded London Knights has advanced past the second round, while Kings forward prospect Liam Greentree saw his OHL season come to a close in a dramatic Game 7 loss. Let’s catch you up on what just happened and what is about to take place.

Liam Greentree (#2 Windsor Spitfires) vs. #3 Kitchener Rangers: Kitchener Rangers 4-3 Series WIN
The 2024 first-round draft pick Liam Greentree and his second seeded Windsor Spitfires were ousted in unlikely fashion falling in seven games after holding a 3-0 series lead. Greentree began the series with three straight impactful games had nine points (7-2=9), including a monumental and franchise record five-goal, six-point (5-1=6) performance in Game 3. Leading 3-0 in the series, Greentree fell victim to illness while several of his teammates fell victim to injuries. After playing under the weather in Game 4 and falling to the Kitchener Rangers 3-0 on home ice, Greentree missed Game 5 along with eight other skaters (illness and injury related). Greentree returned to the lineup for Game 6 and Game 7, but as admitted by his Head Coach Greg Walters, his captain probably shouldn’t have even played. Walters was quoted after Game 7 saying “You look at our captain [Greentree], he probably shouldn’t have been playing. He was sick and getting IV’s to be able to play and that’s who he is.”

The Spitfires fell 4-0 in Game 6 and 2-1 in overtime in the winner-take-all Game 7 as Greentree battled to even suit up. Greentree, who totaled the third most points in the OHL during the regular season (49-70=119), currently leads the OHL in goals this postseason (14) despite going without a point in the final three games. Greentree went pointless in three consecutive games just once during the regular season, something that only an illness likely would’ve driven.

Once recovered and healthy from the illness he is currently dealing with it is presumed that the 6-foot-3 winger could join the Kings organization as a black ace during the current playoff run, or suit up with the AHL’s Ontario Reign on an ATO, with his entry-level deal already signed.

Jared Woolley (#1 London Knights) vs. #5 Erie Otters: London Knights 4-0 Series WIN
Still alive and very well, Jared Woolley and his London Knights have absolutely rolled through the first two rounds of the OHL’s postseason with back-to-back series sweeps. After beating the Erie Otters by an average of three goals per game in Games 1-3, Woolley and Knights were pushed to overtime in Game 4 but ultimately prevailed 4-3. Woolley, the 6-foot-5, 207-pound offensively capable defenseman picked up a pair of assists and was a +7 in the four-game sweep.

Jared Woolley (#1 London Knights) vs. #3 Kitchener Rangers — Game 1: Friday, 4:00 PM
What was one game away from being a Greentree versus Woolley matchup will now be a London Knights versus Kitchener Rangers Western Conference Finals. While the Knights ran away with the OHL’s best regular season record with 112 points, it was the Rangers that were the only other team in the league to reach a triple-digit point total the season (100 points). With the two best teams happening to not only be in the same conference, but the same division as well (Midwest Division), it’s Woolley’s Knights that had the upper-hand across their six regular season meetings. Going 4-1-1 against Kitchener, the Knights outscored the Rangers 19-17 while Woolley earned up a pair of assists during the regular season.

Woolley and the Knights will begin the conference finals on Friday evening at home at 4:00 PM local time.

Hampton Slukynsky’s Season Continues
As announced today, Kings prospect Hampton Slukynsky will continue his season at the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championships, representing Team USA.

Slukynsky is coming off one heck of a season, at multiple levels. He began the season as the second-string goaltender as a freshman at Western Michigan University. He made Team USA for the World Juniors and won both of the games he started in goal. By the end of his collegiate season, Sllukynsky had won the starting job and carried over a strong conclusion of the regular season into the playoffs, where he led the Broncos to the National Championship. He allowed just six goals over four games in the tournament and was selected to the All-Tournament Team for his performance, Western Michigan’s first-ever national title.

Now, he’ll join Boston’s Jeremy Swayman and Utah’s Joey Daccord as the goaltending trio for the United States. Beginning on May 9, Slukynsky and his teammates will head overseas to participate in the event hosted in Sweden and Denmark. Not expecting the young goaltender to see a ton of action behind two NHL veterans, but a great experience nonetheless, showing just how highly though of he is within USA Hockey’s circle.
