LA Kings sign forward Martin Chromiak to one-year, two-way contract extension (AAV: $850,000)

The LA Kings have signed forward Martin Chromiak to a one-year contract extension. It’s a two-way contract, carrying an AAV of $850,000 at the NHL level.

Chromiak was one of the top offensive players for the AHL’s Ontario Reign last season, a testament to the improvements and the development he’s made over the last few seasons. Chromiak led the Reign in goals (28) and points (56), posting career bests in both categories. He’s improved his offensive totals in each of his four AHL seasons, with his 2025-26 output double what he produced in his rookie season. An easy decision to extend Chromiak to see where Year 5 takes him.

He’s at that point in his career where he’s probably starting to work his way more and more into the NHL roster picture, even if he’s not quite there yet. Chromiak, as noted above, led the Ontario Reign in goals and points last season. He was an impact guy on the power play, as he scored 12 of his 28 goals on the man advantage. He played on the team’s top offensive line throughout the course of the season. After the Reign were eliminated in the Calder Cup Playoffs, Chromiak joined up with Team Slovakia at the 2026 IIHF World Championships and turned in his best-ever showing on the international stage, as he again led his team in goals (4) and points (6) in seven games played.

Now, at 23-years-old, we’ll see if Chromiak can take the next step and that’s to the NHL. As one of the higher-end players in Ontario, someone who has put the work in at the AHL, now we’ll see if Chromiak can work his way into the mix with the NHL team. That might not be right out of training camp, depending on how the Kings roster shakes out here over the summer, but Chromiak has moved himself into that conversation. Should there be a trade or an injury, a need for offense during the season, Chromiak is now a guy the Kings should be looking towards as an option on the wings. He’s earned that through the way he’s come through the system and developed, specifically this past season. He’s now a guy to watch in training camp. The way he plays the game is likely not tailored towards the fourth line, so he’s probably not going to come in and win a job in the way that Jeff Malott did last season, though it is always possible. However, depending on how things shake out, the Kings do have openings on the wings, depending on how the summer goes. Could also be a situation where Chromiak starts the season in the AHL and potentially gets his chance during the season.

That we are having those kinds of conversations with Chromiak is a really good thing. As a fifth-round pick, Chromiak has taken some time, certainly. But now he’s reached that point and that’s a testament to the work that he has put in, first and foremost, and also several people who have worked with him on his game along the way. It’s exciting to see a player taken in the later rounds thrive in the AHL and put themselves in a position to be in the mix to move up. Chromiak is there for the first time. Good on him. The next step is far greater than the ones he’s already taken and it’s a step that others have not been able to make. Won’t be easy, but I think he’s a guy who is work keeping an eye on coming training camp in September.

Chromiak, 23, played his fourth full campaign with the Ontario Reign, the Kings’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, last season where he set professional career-highs in games played (71), goals (28), assists (28) and points (56) to lead all Reign players in each category. Chromiak also set career-marks in game-winning goals (7) and power-play goals (12) which led the team in both categories and tied for third and fourth-most among all AHL skaters. He added one goal in five Calder Cup Playoff contests.

Selected in the fifth-round (128th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft, Chromiak has played in 267 career AHL games over parts of five seasons with Ontario, accumulating 76 goals and 79 assists for 155 points (76-79=155) with 26 power-play goals, 14 game-winning goals and 72 penalty minutes (PIM). He has added a pair of goals and one assist (2-1=3) in 10 career Calder Cup Playoff games.

Prior to turning pro, Chromiak appeared in 88 games for the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) over two seasons (2019-20; 2021-22) where he posted 55 goals and 119 points (55-64=119), including a team-leading 44 goals (44-42=86) in the 2021-22 campaign. Before joining the Canadian junior ranks, Chromiak played for HC Dukla Trenčín of Slovak Extraliga, Slovakia’s top professional hockey league, collecting 26 points (12-14=26) with a cumulative plus-12 rating in 66 games over parts of three seasons (2018-21).

Internationally, the Ilava, Slovakia native has represented his home country in five International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) tournaments, including three IIHF Men’s World Championships (2026, 2025, 2023), one IIHF Men’s World Junior Championship (2021) and one IIHF Men’s Under-18 World Junior Championship (2019).
