Round 1 – Kings vs. Avalanche.
For the first time in a long time, the Kings will take on a team that is not the Edmonton Oilers in Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The matchup was more or less solidified at the second intermission tonight, when Anaheim defeated Nashville, while Edmonton had a substantial lead on Vancouver. Those results, regardless of what happened in Calgary, set up the Kings/Avalanche matchup.
The Kings and Avalanche have met twice before in the Stanley Cup Playoffs throughout the history of both clubs. The matchups came in consecutive seasons, in 2001 and 2002. Colorado won in seven games in both years. The Avalanche were victorious in the second round in 2001, on route to a Stanley Cup championship, before winning in seven games again the following season in the first round.

Expecting the Kings to practice on Saturday, April 18 in their only practice opportunity prior to Game 1. Tomorrow will be a team day off, after what will be a very late arrival home from Calgary. Then it’s go-time. Saturday-afternoon for Game 1 in Colorado, the first matinee in the postseason for the Kings in some time. Will have some more thoughts tomorrow. No one here under any illusions about what’s to come, against the NHL’s best team. But the Kings are in the dance, which means more hockey to come.
