A few roster moves here on this Sunday afternoon.
The Kings have assigned the following three players to the AHL’s Ontario Reign – Jacob Doty, Jack Hughes, Kenta Isogai.
Those three players will join the Ontario Reign’s training camp, which will begin tomorrow at Toyota Sports Performance Center with a small group of players.
Doty, Hughes and Isogai were all with the Kings on either PTO or an ATO agreement, with all three players signed to AHL contracts for the 2025-26 season. Doty is a veteran and a leader in Ontario, having been with the club dating back to the 2019-20 season. For reference, that was my final full season working with the Reign, when Doty made the team out of camp, which he attended on a try-out basis. Has stuck around ever since, a testament to the work he’s put in and the approach he’s taken in his time with Ontario.
For Hughes and Isogai, both players played in both games at the 2025 Golden State Rookie Faceoff in Irvine earlier this month and I felt that both players stood out positively. It was important for Hughes especially to make a positive impression and I felt he did so. Hughes was a second-round pick by the Kings in 2022 and ultimately did not receive an entry-level contract with the Kings, signing an AHL deal with Ontario instead. He’s got a chance to earn a spot with the AHL club, either at center or on the wing, and I thought he looked good in Irvine. Isogai was a lesser-known player but he stood out amongst the players who I was less familiar with In fact, his play in Game 1 earned him a bump off the fourth line and into the Top-9 for Game 2. Good showings for both and now they’ll report to the Ontario Reign.
On the Ontario front, expecting to see a small group begin camp tomorrow at Toyota Sports Performance Center in El Segundo. Doty, Hughes and Isogai are all expected to participate along with several players on camp invitations at the AHL level. With that in mind, I expect there to be a larger-scale cutdown over the next few days, including some players who will be placed on waivers. The Kings have a preseason game in Boise, Idaho on Tuesday against the Utah Mammoth which could serve as a final showcase opportunity for players on the exterior of the bubble. Could be that last chance to stick around a bit longer, or for younger players who will be with Ontario this season, one last taste of NHL action before going down. I am expecting the Kings to run with close to a full NHL lineup for the exhibition games on October 2 and October 4, so Tuesday’s game in Boise will likely feature some players who could be assigned to the AHL shortly after.
Today’s moves leaves the Kings roster at 27 forwards, 16 defensemen and five goaltenders who will be on the ice tomorrow in El Segundo. As noted, expecting that number to shrink drastically over the next few days, with the Kings/Mammoth game on Tuesday serving as potentially that final cutoff before the Kings get their roster likely inside 30 players vying for one of 23 spots for Opening Night. Still battles to be contested, with Tuesday’s game another opportunity for players on the bubble to show they deserve to stick around longer.
