Kevin Fiala hosts Fiala’s Friends charity game in Zurich

A little offseason hockey for a good cause!

Kings forward Kevin Fiala led a squad composed mostly of Switzerland-born NHL players in a charity “friendly match” in Zurich over the weekend, in conjunction with the Fiala’s Friends charity program.

Fiala was joined by fellow Swiss-born skaters Nico Hischier, Timo Meier, Nino Neiderreiter and others, as well as European NHL players such as Tim Stutzle and Lucas Raymond, and former soccer goalkeeper Petr Cech, who became a hockey netminder after he retired from a career that saw him as one of the top goalies on the planet with Chelsea and Arsenal.

The game was between Fiala’s team of players and the ZSC Lions, a professional team in Switzerland who won the National League championship last season. The Lions are currently in preseason mode, while the NHL players are in the final month of their offseason. Fiala’s Friends ultimately won 10-3, with Fiala scoring one goal for his team during the second period.

Per Fiala’s website, the proceeds received from the game will go to the Children’s Hospital in St. Gallen to support critically ill children, as well as to the youth programs of the ZSC Lions and EHC Uzwil.

The initiative for Fiala is not surprising, considering his efforts in the community here in Los Angeles. Fiala has been extremely proactive in visiting Children’s Hospital Los Angeles during his down time throughout the season with the Kings. Fiala routinely brings out kids from CHLA to Kings games, arranging for their tickets at the game and a post-game meet and greet. He set up youth hockey camps both in California and Switzerland to work with aspiring young hockey players while also involving himself in other charitable causes, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Adopt-A-Family, among other team-related initiatives.

He was nominated for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for his efforts this past season as the Kings nominee, a nice recognition for his efforts throughout the year.
