One more for the World Championships.
As he did last season, Kings forward Kevin Fiala is a late addition for Team Switzerland, linking up with his teammates earlier today in advance of their third game of the tournament. Switzerland skated to a victory and an overtime defeat in its first two games of the tournament, collecting four points, with Fiala joining the team in advance of today’s game against the United States, which includes Kings prospect Hampton Slukynsky as the third goaltender. Switzerland skated to a 3-0 win over the USA in that game, with Fiala collecting his first point, an assist, in the victory.

Fiala was the Most Valuable Player of the 2024 IIHF World Championships, as he led Team Switzerland to a silver medal in the tournament, falling to Czechia in the gold-medal game. Fiala finished last season’s tournament with 13 points (7-6-13) from eight games played, with his MVP also netting him a place on the All-Tournament Team, as well as being recognized as the event’s best forward. Fiala has two silver medals in his career at the World Championships, with his 2024 medal joining 2018’s and has been selected as a Top-3 player on his team twice, including last season.
All-time, Fiala has skated in 42 games at the World Championships with Switzerland, totaling 36 points (14-22-36).
For teams like Switzerland, these events are more important than to say the United States. For Fiala, he is from a small country and has made it known he wants to participate and play for his country at every opportunity he has. This is, in many ways, a preparation for the 2026 Winter Olympics, which will be Fiala’s first opportunity to play in a best-on-best international tournament. He’ll be on that team certainly, as a key piece of the group competing in Italy.
As noted, Fiala and Team Switzerland were already in action this morning in their third game of the tournament, against the United States, with Switzerland collecting its second win of the tournament, this by a 3-0 margin. Fiala collected his first point with an assist on his team’s second goal, as they jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and held that margin throughout the entire contest. Fiala will play in four additional games throughout the event, before what is trending towards participation in the quarterfinals beginning next week.
