Live Thread – Development Camp Scrimmage

Team White 7, Team Black 1
Monday, July 10, 2023 – 9:00 a.m. PT
Toyota Sports Performance Center – El Segundo, CA

Second Half
25:00 – The ice is cut, the players are back and the puck is dropped. Starting things off 5-on-5, will see if they shrink that down as we go along.
23:30 – Team White Goal: Second goal of the game for Chromiak, who gets a redirected effort to go less than two minutes into the second half.
20:18 – Nice connection between Pinelli and Laferriere, with Pinelli driving down the right wing and finding Laferriere in the high slot, where he shot is narrowly deflected wide.
15:00 – Team White Goal: Ryan Conmy nets his second of the scrimmage, this from a dirty area of the ice. Net front screen, deflection off a point shot from defenseman David Breazeale. Good positioning, nice hand-eye, from a guy who has been around the net all morning.
11:45 – Team White Goal: Clarke feeds Max Heim at the back post for the goal, nice 1-2 passing play for a finish at the back post. Team White has a commanding lead midway through the second half.
7:10 – Such a small thing to watch for, but Clarke’s feet when changing direction as he advances the puck are so impressive. Just little twitches that throw off a forechecker, changes the angle. He should be standing out in this camp and it’s good to see that he is.
2:45 – Otto Salin just snapped a pass from inside his own zone, along the right-hand boards, all the way across the ice, tape-to-tape, to a forward streaking up the left wall. Impressive dish through traffic to a forward in stride. Activated offensively later in the shift too, but the pass didn’t find him open on the right side. Good shift.
0:50 – Team White Goal: Aatu Jamsen gets his team’s seventh of the game, with Jack Hughes and Brandt Clarke assisting. Clarke picked off a pass in the neutral zone and his pass was deflected, to Hughes, who got it to Jamsen for the tap-in goal at the back post.

First Half
25:00 – Scrimmage is underway! Looks like two, 25-minute halves here on the final scrimmage of development camp.
21:30 – Jared Wright gets a good look from the right-hand circle, but Erik Portillo squares himself and makes a glove save look easy.
19:24 – Team White Goal: Ryan Conmy scores the first goal of the scrimmage for Team White. Conmy works down low with Helenius, wraps the puck around the net on the backhand and scores inside the near post. 1-0.
13:45 – Clarke with another dish through traffic, this to Chromiak on his off wing, but the pass short-hands him a bit and he doesn’t fully connect on the shot. Impressive early from 92, who has set up two, Grade-A chances.
11:20 – Team Black Goal: Sean Tschigerl finishes a centering feed from Koehn Ziemmer from close range to equalize just shy of 15 minutes into the scrimmage. Good shift from Ziemmer, who started the play in transition a few moments prior.
8:15 – Couple of strong drives to the net from 2022 draft picks, Angus Booth and Jared Wright. Booth is denied by Erik Portillo on a wraparound, Wright is saved from in tight.
6:17 – Team White Goal – Sam Alfano puts Team White back ahead as he buries a rebound off a Max Heim breakaway. Penalties are awarded as penalty shots, but with backchecking as they touch the puck. Portillo denied the breakaway, but Alfano put home the rebound.
2:50 – Noticed Jack Hughes’ work along the boards a couple of times in the first half. Spoke himself about playing with more pace, but even though he isn’t the biggest guy, showed some shiftiness in 1-on-1 battles.
1:10 – Team White Goal: Martin Chromiak snaps one home off the rush from the left-hand circle. Great shot, beat the goaltender clean from a good area on the ice. 3-1.
0:00 – 3-1 Team White at the break. We’ll take a break here for an ice cut, before what should be some different situations (4v4, 3v3) in the second half.
