Overtime
2:50 – Brandt Clarke escapes the penalty box and the teams return to skate 4-on-4 until the next whistle.
1:27 – SJS Goal – Logan Couture. The Kings fall short in overtime after Logan Couture wins it in the 3-on-3 extra session with his first goal of the preseason.

Third Period
20:00 – Time for the third period in San Jose! The Sharks hold a 1-0 lead over the Kings with 20 minutes to play.
19:01 – LAK Goal – Carl Grundstrom. Brandt Clarke put the puck on Grundstrom’s tape for a redirect at the top of the crease and the Kings are on the board early in the third!
12:45 – The play has been noticeably quicker to start the third. Matt Villalta has been active in his crease and has denied a few Sharks looks in front to keep the game even.
10:35 – A loose puck squirted out to the front of the Kings net for Meier and Villalta stretched out to deny him, making a great save with the glove.
9:50 – SJS Goal – Timo Meier. A deflection on a shot from the point by defender Matt Benning hit Meier on its way past Villalta, giving San Jose a 2-1 lead.
8:21 – Thomas Bordeleau was called for slashing and the Kings are back on the power play for the eighth time today, looking to get even once again.
6:10 – The Sharks get the kill and continue to hold the lead. San Jose’s penalty kill has frustrated the Kings for most of today’s game, which has been played mostly on special teams.
5:10 – LA has reached 40 shots on goal in the game. They’ll continue to put pressure on the Sharks as we reach the final five minutes of the third period.
2:35 – LAK Goal – Blake Lizotte. A 2-on-1 developed that saw Carl Grundstrom take the puck down the left wing and center it to Lizotte for a tying goal. The Kings are even late in the third.
0:00 – A late holding penalty to Brandt Clarke with just 7 seconds left gave the Sharks their seventh power play of the game. San Jose will start OT with a 4-on-3 power play.

Second Period
20:00 – Byfield returns to the ice to begin the second period for LA. Lias Andersson exits the penalty box and we’re underway for period 2!
18:47 – Grundstrom’s shot off a 2-on-1 with Lizotte is stopped by Kahkonen. Then off a faceoff, a shot by Roy was kept out by the San Jose netminder.
17:21 – The Kings are back in the penalty box as Taylor Ward goes off for high-sticking. He will sit for four minutes, as it was called a double-minor penalty.
14:50 – Akil Thomas comes up with a great shot block on an open look for Timo Meier. He dove in front of the chance to keep it away from Quick.
11:35 – San Jose’s Jeffrey Viel gets called for cross-checking Brandt Clarke and roughing Brendan Lemieux on the same play. Now the Kings have their own 4-minute man advantage.
7:40 – Despite a final opportunity from the point by Bisson with Andersson in front of the San Jose net, the Kings were unable to solve Kahkonen and convert on the power play.
6:49 – The Kings get their fourth power play of the game on a roughing penalty that went to San Jose’s Thomas Bordeleau. During a media timeout, Matt Villalta replaced Jonathan Quick in net. Quck finished the game with 17 saves on 18 shots in just over 32 minutes of action.
5:36 – Kings go to a 5-on-3 power play on a cross-checking penalty on Montana Onyebuchi.
4:22 – Great opportunity on the man-advantage for Arthur Kaliyev, who was robbed on a one-timer by Kahkonen who made his most challenging save of the day.
3:30 – San Jose’s Matt Benning goes off for interference. LA will have more time on the power play coming up.
2:29 – Montana Onyebuchi goes back to the penalty box for cross checking and the Kings go on a 5-on-3 again. What a parade to the penalty box here in the second!
0:00 – Lots of penalties in the second, but no goals! The Kings outshot San Jose 20-5 in the middle period and had six PP chances, but the score stayed the same. It’s still 1-0 in favor of the Sharks with 20 minutes to play in San Jose.

First Period
20:00 – Game on in San Jose!
19:42 – Just seconds into the game, Jonathan Quick is already in midseason form! He robbed Timo Meier on a 2-on-1 feed from Hertl to keep the game scoreless early.
17:48 – First penalty of the day goes to San Jose’s Jasper Weatherby, who goes off for roughing.
15:30 – Kings come up empty on their early power play chance, despite a good opportunity for Lias Anderson in the lower part of the left circle.
13:35 – SJS Goal – Luke Kunin. One of the new acquisitions over the summer for the Sharks strikes early, scoring on a redirect off a perfect setup by Tomas Hertl to give the Sharks an early 1-0 advantage.
13:12 – Kim Nousiainen takes a penalty for holding Tomas Hertl. San Jose to the power play for the first time.
11:15 – Helge Grans heads off for tripping, giving the Sharks an abbreviated 5-on-3 power play chance.
9:17 – Third straight penalty called on LAK, as Akil Thomas is caught for a tripping violation. So far Jonathan Quick has been excellent in the first period, doing a great job tracking the puck.
7:17 – Three straight penalty kills for the Kings! Backed by Quick, LA still trails by only a goal despite allowing 11 shots on goal in the period including many good looks during San Jose’s power plays.
2:37 – The Kings offense has been quick so far today, in large part due to the three penalties they took. Quinton Byfield played a lot of PK time earlier in the period and did a nice job all over the ice.
1:59 – Byfield took an open-ice hit from Adam Raska and got up slowly. Retaliation from Lias Andersson drew a penalty for roughing.
1:21 – Lemieux had a shorthanded breakaway with no one else near him and he was unable to open the legs of Kahkonen. San Jose continues to hold a one-goal edge.
0:00 – The first period comes to an end with the Sharks holding a 1-0 lead thanks to Jonathan Quick and the LA penalty kill that discarded four San Jose opportunities in 20 minutes.

Insiders, welcome back to preseason hockey! As reported in today’s preview, the expectation is that Quinton Byfield and Arthur Kaliyev will make their preseason debuts, as well as Matt Roy and Jonathan Quick. The lineup will have an eye towards youth overall, missing players like Kopitar, Doughty and Danault, in favor of prospects like Martin Chromiak, Brandt Clarke, Francesco Pinelli and Helge Grans.
