Familiar name Bell replaces Hajt in Reign assistant role

David Bell has been named the new assistant coach for the Ontario Reign, the team announced on Tuesday.

Bell replaces Chris Hajt, who recently was hired by the Buffalo Sabres in a different assistant role. Hajt was with the organization the previous three seasons.

The Wiarton, Ontario, native Bell was previously an assistant to head coach Mike Stothers with OHL-Owen Sound from 2004-07. In another organizational connection, Kings assistant GM Mike Futa served as Owen Sound’s GM from 2002-07.

Last season, Bell served as head coach of OHL-Niagara and led the team to a playoff berth and a 23-35-6-4 regular season record. He was an assistant with the IceDogs the three seasons prior. Bell previously coached in the AHL as an assistant from 2007-09 with the Springfield Falcons.

Bell played six pro hockey seasons, appearing in 60 AHL games with Springfield, Portland and Saint John. He won an ECHL Kelly Cup with Greenville in 2002.
