October 22 morning skate quotes: Darryl Sutter

On how Jeff Zatkoff’s injury occurred:
He stopped a shot and his groin tightened up. We’ve seen it in a game, and now we’ve seen it in practice. [Reporter: Does he go see the doctor later today?] You know what, I’m sure you’ll get something. I was more focused on the goalie who was starting, not the goalie who wasn’t.

On what he’s seen from Vancouver:
Well, they’re 4-0 and they’ve given up six goals against. [Reporter: Always seemed like they had a pretty good ability to keep the puck out of the net. Is that enhanced this year, or just off to a good start?] I don’t think that was the case last year, was it? I think you have to be in the top page in goals against to be a playoff team. I’m not sure that they were. You’d have to check, but same goalies.

On Peter Budaj:
I thought he made the necessary saves, saves he had to. I think it was obviously the one goal, the puckhandling part of it. That’s one second faster in the NHL than it is in the American League when you go to play the puck, so you have to be able to do that. I think that now, the challenge for someone like Peter who’s trying to reestablish himself is to do it back-to-back.

On Billy Ranford playing in the Heritage Classic alumni game:
He’s coming off a back surgery last year. He looks better this year. That’s one thing about our goalie coaches is they’re both former goalies, so if we need goalies, we’ve got several. It’s not like we’re short of goalies.
