Good morning, Edmonton, and good morning, Insiders.
The second day of a back-to-back set has brought us 185 miles to the north, where it is a balmy five degrees outside. But instead of writing about the weather again, I’m going to write about press boxes for the second straight day!
You may be aware of the infamous Saddledome Catwalk. It is the modern NHL arena’s version of the rope bridge from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. There are two pressboxes-slash-gondolas situated on opposite ends of the rink, high above the playing surface. One gondola holds print and digital media and the off-ice officials; the other holds broadcasters and hockey operations staffs. To pass from one side to the next, you must cross a narrow path of wooden slats, walk around the arena’s servers and above the scoreboard, and- aw, just watch the video.
It’s a good thing that the horn didn’t sound while I was directly over the scoreboard, because I would have lost my phone over the edge (and perhaps my lunch, too). Is Mortal Kombat big in Canada? Should the Saddledome Catwalk be used as a staging ground? Yes, yes, a thousand times, yes.
It’s time to get moving on WUWTK, so that’s all I’ve got from Edmonton this morning. Enjoy your last few days of the holiday season, Insiders. There’s a lot more to come from Oil Country.
