October 8 postgame quotes: Darryl Sutter

On any positives that could be taken from the 4-0 loss:
I thought it was all right. We got through the first, killed those penalties in the first. The tripping penalty we took, they scored on. We don’t have to do that. They scored basically a full length faceoff goal in the…defensive side. We shouldn’t be doing that, either.

On whether the team was affected by the pregame ceremony:
I thought the last couple days our energy level and everything was good. I think emotionally…for whatever reason, I thought it was part of the emotion, we had nothing.

On whether Trevor Lewis is “OK”:
I haven’t really asked.

On any positives that could be taken from the 4-0 loss:
It’s a tough game, tough to take anything out of that. I mean, our power play, which is your top guys, even when it was two-nothing, they could’ve given us some momentum. There’s not much to take out of it. I thought our penalty killers did a good job. Other than that, I don’t like pulling a goalie in the first game of the year.

On whether he talked to the players about a potential “hangover”:
Oh, I don’t think that’s the case. We had a really good preseason. I think anybody that’s been around the team the last three weeks knows that hasn’t been an issue at all. [Reporter: I’m talking about tonight, though, after the celebration kind of a deal, not before that.] Tonight? [Reporter: Yeah. The hangover from the celebration itself.] You mean from the banner? [Reporter: Yeah.] Did you ever just stop and consider maybe that San Jose just flat out outplayed us?

On pulling Jonathan Quick:
You know what? It’s just like I said. I don’t like pulling goalies in the first game of the year, or ever. At that point, it’s not Jonathan’s deal, it’s Jonesy’s deal.

On concern over playing from behind, and whether it’s a “precursor”:
Well, you’re not always leading, you’re not always behind, and you’re not always tied. There’s three different things that can happen during a game. It’s always one of those three.

On Brayden McNabb’s performance:
I thought he was really good early, and I think it wore on him as the game went on. When you play with Drew, that means you’re on the ice against the best players. Hey, it was a good experience for him.

On any surprise over San Jose’s start to the game:
I don’t think it was anything special either way. As I said, it’s one-nothing after one, and they scored a power play goal and a faceoff goal.
