Though the Los Angeles Kings have visited the MTS Centre three times since the Winnipeg Jets relocated from Atlanta, the Jets have never visited Staples Center. The last time Los Angeles hosted Winnipeg in an NHL game was on January 3, 1996, when Deron Quint scored twice, and Darren Turcotte, Alexei Zhamnov and Shane Doan also scored to lead the visitors to a 5-4 win over the Kings, who relied on goals from Vitali Yachmenev, Eric Lacroix, Tony Granato and Wayne Gretzky. Tim Cheveldae earned the win, while Kelly Hrudey took the loss at The Forum.
The Kings defeated the Jets once in four tries in the season prior to Winnipeg’s relocation to the American southwest, the most notable game of which was Gretzky’s final game with the Kings on February 26, 1996, a 4-3 loss at Winnipeg Arena. Los Angeles was in the midst of a 24-game stretch in which they won twice.
On Saturday, a Winnipeg team will play in Los Angeles for the first time in over 18 years. Earlier today, I joined Rick Ralph on TSN 1290-Winnipeg to preview tomorrow night’s game between the Kings and Jets.
