Behold, Wells Fargo Center, the home of the Villanova Wildcats (basketball / part time), Philadelphia 76ers and Philadelphia Flyers since 1996.
The lead photo is courtesy of Getty Images, as is this night time shot of the arena:
Situated east of Philadelphia International Airport, the arena is grouped together with Citizens Bank Park and Lincoln Financial Field. The Spectrum previously sat directly north of the Wells Fargo Center before it was felled by a wrecking ball during the 2010-11 hockey season, while Veterans Stadium, situated north of The Spectrum, was imploded in 2004. The pitching rubber and home plate from Veterans Stadium, both of which are commemorated with historical markers, remain embedded in an adjacent parking lot.
On the inside, the Wells Fargo Center gives off the impression of a Honda Center on 1.2x scale. Instead of a photo gallery, here’s a video of the arena’s interior, shot during Sunday’s practice:
Like Nassau Coliseum, there’s a banner to commemorate Billy Joel’s string of sold out shows in Philadelphia. Alongside the Billy Joel banner is one commemorating Bruce Springsteen’s 53 sold out shows in the area.
In addition to the retired jerseys of Bernie Parent (1), Mark Howe (2), Barry Ashbee (4), Bill Barber (7) and Bobby Clarke (16), the histories of the Flyers and 76ers also hang impressively from the rafters.
Operating at 100% capacity this season, the Flyers play in front of 19,837 fans per night.
