Good morning, Calgary

Good morning from Calgary, where the local residents are just waking up on a Daylight Savings time-affected Monday morning. I don’t recall seeing this type of light at 8:00 a.m. from this hotel.

Because numbers of hotel rooms are like Snapchat photos in the sense that they stay with you for a short period of time and then dissolve into the ether, we’re not always prepared to answer “Have I stayed in this hotel room before?” But I’m pretty sure that I was sitting at this very same desk, taking pictures of the very same view, one and a half weeks prior.

I’ve visited Calgary quite a few times between my work in junior hockey and with the Kings, though I haven’t explored much of the city beyond the downtown area. On a superficial level, it does give off a vibe similar to Denver’s. It’s at a high altitude at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, with a prevailing western environment that mixes well with traces of a large, cosmopolitan urban area. Outdoor activities abound in Calgary, as they do in Denver.

There are still heavy western and rural influences, even in central Calgary. Take note of the Calgary Grain Exchange, located on a corner diagonal from our hotel:

I need to get to Waking up with the Kings, so there’s no Highlighted Local Artist this morning. There is, however, a video of our arrival at YYC last night. It’s mostly blips and blinking lights:

With a pair of 6:00 p.m. starts in Winnipeg and Edmonton, there haven’t been any late night arrivals to this point on this road trip. Though the team played last night, they will still take the ice for a (likely optional) morning skate at 11:30 a.m. I’ll have lots more to come throughout what should be a busy Monday at LA Kings Insider.

Good morning, Calgary.
