Sutter coaches milestone game

Darryl Sutter coached his 900th NHL regular-season game last night, and has a career record of 430-331-139. Sutter now ranks 26th all-time in games coached, and 23rd in regular-season wins. Who is in 22nd place? His brother, Brian, who went 451-417-140 in 13 seasons behind the bench with St. Louis, Boston, Calgary and Chicago. Was Sutter aware that he had coached his 900th game?

SUTTER: “My son phoned me and told me that. I told him he kind of forgot playoff games. [laughs] Your goal every year, as a coach, should be to get to 100 games a year. It’s not very often you can do that, but if you can, that’s what your goal should be.’’

For the record, Sutter has coached 101 playoff games (with a 47-54 record). If Sutter coaches the Kings through next season, he will be on the cusp of 1,000 games, a level achieved by only 21 NHL coaches. Terry Murray reached that mark for the Kings this season, and was fired after game No. 1,012.
