THIRD PERIOD
In goal: It’s still Quick against Howard.
Red Wings 4, Kings 1: Detroit took a 4-1 lead with 4:54 remaining in the third period. After a scrum in the corner of the Kings’ zone, Pavel Datsyuk picked up the puck in the right circle, made a quick move toward the net and scored on a wrist shot.
SECOND PERIOD
In goal: It’s still Quick against Howard.
Red Wings 2, Kings 1: Detroit took the lead with a power-play goal 7:08 into the second period. Niklas Kronwall went to the front of the net, past Kings defenseman Drew Doughty, and found an open spot as he took a centering pass from Tomas Holmstrom and beat Quick on a close-range one-timer to give the Red Wings a 2-1 lead.
Red Wings 3, Kings 1: After the Kings’ Anze Kopitar failed to score on a penalty shot and the Kings failed to score on the power play, the Red Wings took a 3-1 lead with 4:22 remaining in the second period. A pass from Brendan Smith sparked a 2-on-1, and Justin Abdelkader beat Quick with a wrist shot from the right side.
End of period: The Kings went 0-for-1 on the power play and 0-for-1 on the penalty kill and failed to score on a penalty shot. Through two periods, shots are 30-15 in favor of Detroit, and the Red Wings will be on the power play for the first 55 seconds of the third period.
FIRST PERIOD
In goal: It’s the Kings’ Jonathan Quick against the Red Wings’ Jimmy Howard.
Kings 1, Red Wings 0: The Kings’ Justin Williams took a tripping penalty, and both teams got goals. First, off a faceoff, the Kings’ Mike Richards outraced two Red Wings to the puck and beat Howard with a close-range backhand shot. Richards’ unassisted shorthanded goal gave the Kings a 1-0 lead at the 6:37 mark.
Kings 1, Red Wings 1: Just 37 seconds after Richards’ goal, the Red Wings tied the game on the power play. Nicklas Lidstrom took a point shot with Tomas Holmstrom running traffic in front. Pavel Datsyuk then picked up the rebound in front and scored from close range to make it a 1-1 game at the 7:14 mark.
End of period: The Red Wings outshot the Kings 13-8 and had a handful of quality scoring chances, although the Kings also hit a post in the first period. The Kings went 0-for-1 on the power play and 1-for-2 on the penalty kill, and scored a shorthanded goal.
