The view from Detroit

The Kings had a four-game winning streak over Detroit going into last night’s game, but that came crashing down as they allowed seven consecutive goals and lost 7-4. Here’s a sampling of how the game was covered by the Detroit media, followed by some additional postgame quotes from the Red Wings’ locker room…

COACH MIKE BABCOCK
(on the game…) “We gave up a power-play goal first period, first goal, but other than that I thought the special teams were good. I actually thought we scored timely goals early and the fact that they were better than us right off the hop and we scored some goals and really got playing. With eight minutes left we stopped playing…but good two points for us and we can move on in the trip.”

(on not making big trades at the trade deadline…) “We’re not too concerned about what anybody else thinks. … We like our team, we think we’re going to be a good team. We’ve just got to keep playing at the highest-possible level we can and that will be our focus over the last 20 games.”

NICKLAS LIDSTROM
(on young players getting ice time…) “Some of the younger guys got an opportunity to get more ice time and get a chance to play in key situations, and I think they’ve learned a lot from that too. Then when you get some of the veteran guys back it helps our lineup that the young guys have gotten some of the ice time and the experience, too. Some of the guys coming back from injuries are fresh and they’re giving us a bit of a jump as well.”

(on the game…) “We knew where they are in the standings and they’re a desperate team, and I thought we played a lot better in our own zone tonight. We’re hanging on to pucks in their end when we had a chance, but we were sorting it out a lot better in our own zone, and we shot the puck too. We’re taking more shots and creating more chances. We got a couple lucky breaks on some of the goals, but we’re being rewarded by going hard to the net.”

DARREN HELM
(on Drew Miller getting two goals…) “He’s been working hard; he’s a good player. He comes to the rink every night and does what he has to do, and to get those two the way he did, the way he plays every night, it’s great for him.”
