The view from New York (Long Island version)

The Kings had their seven-game unbeaten streak against the Islanders snapped, and also lost to the Islanders for the first time in regulation since 2003. Here’s a sampling of how the game was covered by the New York print media, followed by some additional postgame quotes from the Islanders’ locker room…

COACH JACK CAPUANO

(on the game…) “I thought it was a much better game than we played against Boston. Good team, big team. We joined the rush, activated real well. Defensively we were real solid and Al (Montoya) played a great game for us and gave us a chance to win.”

(on whether he thought the Kings were impacted by the long road trip…) “No, that doesn’t have anything to do with it. They had the day off yesterday, they skated, they’re battling in the standings. They have some veterans, some good young guys. They’re well coached.”

(on Al Montoya’s game…) “I don’t know a whole lot about that position, but to me, he took care of the puck, controlled his rebounds. His goalie touches for the most part were good. He communicated well back there. Like I said, he helped us on the breakout tonight, and he made the saves when he had to make them.”

AL MONTOYA

(on the game…) “Our team came out and played hard. We knew this was going to be a good team tonight. We controlled their momentum swings. We came out in the first (period) wanting to win this game and we showed that. They came back and pushed in the second, but we held our ground, did a good job and took care of business.”

(on his level of nerves before his first start since 2009…) “I had nothing to lose. I play the game with nothing to lose. Maybe I should have more starts under my belt, but I don’t look at it like that. I come out here to give this team a chance and I don’t want nerves to get the best of me. I left it all out on the ice and that was my mindset going into the game.”

(on his save, when he was flat on his back…) “Yeah, I fell back on my back and just said ‘hallelujah.’ I remember that one. That was nice, but the team made it pretty easy. I might have made a couple of saves look tough, but for the most part it was just everything from the outside, letting me see everything. That doesn’t happen every night.”

MATT MOULSON

(on the game…) “It’s good we got the win. I would’ve been having some bad dreams after hitting the crossbar on that breakaway. It was good to get those two and the win.”

(on having bragging rights over brother-in-law Jonathan Quick…) “He wasn’t bragging when he shut me out, so I think I’ll just keep it low key.’

(on the Islanders’ recent offensive surge…) “I think we’ve been doing a good job with the forecheck. Guys are in the right places, working hard and it eventually leads to goals. Some games you’ll be down, and early on in the season we might have gone into a shell, but as of late we’re not going to be satisfied with being stopped, and we’re going to do everything we need to get the win.”

(on whether he talked to Quick before the game…) “No talking today. We had dinner yesterday, but he didn’t let me cook. He thought I was going to put something in there. So we went to our in-laws, went to neutral ground and had a good dinner. Lucky to get a couple on him. … I think I was a little more nervous than usual. I didn’t want to get chirped by all our family
members. It was a little motivation I guess.”

FRANS NIELSEN

(on his shorthanded goal…)
NIELSEN: “We just try to be aggressive. When they have those bouncing pucks, we try to release. We know we’re not going to have any backchecking from the forwards because they’re on the power play.”
