Drew Doughty is celebrating his 21st birthday today, which is sort of mind-blowing when you consider that he has already played 182 NHL games. Doughty said his tentative plans included dinner, and then taking in tonight’s Lakers-Clippers game. Doughty’s coach, Terry Murray, was 22 when he made his NHL debut for the California Golden Seals during the 1972-73 season.
MURRAY: “He’s 21, in his third year. It’s incredible. Coming in as an 18-year-old, I can’t comprehend that, knowing where I was as an 18-year-old. It’s amazing how these young guys grow so fast and are so talented and so ready, so prepared to play in the National Hockey League. He’s got a great career ahead of him.”
As part of the Kings’ “My Story” series, Doughty was featured this time, talking about his journey to the NHL. It’s a good read, and you can check it out by clicking here.
