Monarchs lose opener

It was a rough start tonight for the AHL Manchester Monarchs, who lost to Portland 6-5. The Monarchs scored twice to take a 4-3 lead midway through the second period, but the Pirates struck twice in the third period, with 8:06 remaining and 4:21 remaining, to take the lead, then added a late empty-netter. The Monarchs made the final margin 6-5 with David Meckler’s goal with one second remaining, his second goal of the game. Meckler also had an assist, and the Monarchs also got goals from Rich Clune, Dwight King (who also had an assist) and Corey Elkins (shorthanded). Jeff Zatkoff stopped 17 of 22 shots.
