The junior-level Memorial Cup is into its sixth day today, and round-robin play wraps up as the Brandon Wheat Kings play the Calgary Hitmen. It will also be a head-to-head matchup of Kings prospects, as Brandon center Brayden Schenn faces Calgary goalie Martin Jones. The Hitmen also have Kings prospect Brandon Kozun, but Kozun is out of the tournament with a lower-body injury. Kings scout Brent McEwen, who handles Western Canada, is at the tournament and did a Q&A for LAKings.com, talking about the Kings’ prospects at the tournament…
Regardless of what happens today, Brandon and Calgary will play again on Friday, and the winner of Friday’s game will advance to face the Windsor Spitfires in Sunday’s championship game. Both Brandon and Calgary have 1-1 records. Windsor went 3-0 in round-robin play — outscoring its opponents 19-8 — to advance directly to the final.
So far in the tournament, Schenn has one goal and one assist in two games, while Jones is 1-1 with a 4.53 goals-against average and an .879 save percentage.
