March 17 magic numbers

Last night was an awful night for the Kings in terms of competitors’ results. Colorado’s victory over St. Louis moved the Avalanche one point ahead of the Kings for fifth place, although the Kings have one game in hand. The Kings are two points ahead of seventh-place Nashville, with two games in hand. Tuesday wins by Colorado, Nashville, Dallas and Minnesota — and don’t forget Phoenix — made it a worst-case night for the Kings.

Tonight in the West, it’s Calgary at Colorado and Chicago at Anaheim. Who are you cheering for in Calgary vs. Colorado? I honestly don’t know what benefits the Kings more in that one. Here’s the updated “magic number” standings…

7. Nashville. Games remaining: 12. Maximum points: 107.

8. Detroit. Games remaining: 13. Maximum points: 106.
Kings’ magic number: 22.

9. Calgary. Games remaining: 13. Maximum points: 103.
Kings’ magic number: 19.

10. Minnesota. Games remaining: 13. Maximum points: 100.
Kings’ magic number: 16.

11. St. Louis. Games remaining: 13. Maximum points: 99.

12. Dallas. Games remaining: 13. Maximum points: 99.
