Trade talk (or lack thereof)

Some relatively minor deals are trickling in on this final full day before the NHL trade deadline, but given the lack of chatter — at least from reputable sources — it doesn’t seem that there’s going to be a ton of action before noon Pacific time tomorrow. The Kings still have interest in Ray Whitney, and are said to have interest in Alex Ponikarovsky as well — but the latest is that Whitney still has not backed off his request for a multi-year contract extension and (from my friends at ESPN.com) that Carolina is asking for a first-round pick and a player. If those hold up, it’s very likely that Whitney won’t be leaving Carolina.

There are always some surprises on deadline day, but it seems pretty quiet now. Dean Lombardi and Terry Murray like their team, and are wary of tampering too much with locker-room chemistry, so at this point it’s doubtful that anything of significance will happen in the next 21 hours.
