Postgame notes (Jan. 2)

— The Kings are 6-1-1 in their last eight home games, after going 5-6 in their first 11 road games.

— The Kings have killed 32 of their last 36 penalties in the last nine games (88.9 percent). They have killed 13 of their last 14 penalties.

— Today was only the third time Washington has been held to fewer than two goals this season. They were shutout once (Buffalo) and held to one goal in a shootout loss (Toronto).

— Michal Handzus scored his 16th career shorthanded goal (fifth with the Kings), and now has four game-winning goals this season (he had four last season as well). Handzus recently went 21 games without a goal, but now has three goals in his last five games.

— Jonathan Quick is 10-5-1 with a 2.28 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage in his last 16 games.

— Brad Richardson has seven points in the last seven games (two goals, five assists).

— The Kings were outshot 27-19. Alex Ovechkin had seven shots for Washington. Frolov, Handzus and Smyth each had three shots for the Kings.

— Matt Greene was credited with eight hits for the Kings, and Dustin Brown with seven.

— Drew Doughty played a team-high 26 minutes, 48 seconds. Anze Kopitar led all Kings forwards at 21:15.
