It doesn’t seem as though the “Frozen Four” will lead to a Cold War in the Kings’ locker room. Among the four teams remaining in the NCAA hockey tournament are North Dakota (Matt Greene’s school) and the University of Michigan (Jack Johnson’s school) and they will meet in next Thursday’s national semifinals. Greene and Johnson [...]
Johnson postgame quotes
Jack Johnson’s postgame thoughts… (on the game…) JOHNSON: “I thought our power play was doing well. I thought our penalty kill was great. I think just, in general, we were moving well. I think they made some adjustments, and we had to make adjustments in the third too. I think once they realized we were playing [...]
Johnson postgame quotes
Jack Johnson’s postgame thoughts… (on the two power-play goals…) JOHNSON: “I thought we had good movement. Guys were shooting when they could, and I thought that was the biggest thing. I thought we moved well, and moved the puck well. Everyone was in sync.” (on his power-play partnership with Drew Doughty…) JOHNSON: “He and I [...]
Johnson postgame quotes
Jack Johnson’s postgame thoughts… (on the shootout…) JOHNSON: “It makes it a lot harder, no question. I think the whole point of getting a point in overtime is to make it a little more wide open and take chances. I think that was the whole point of why it was put in place, to go for [...]
Undisputed: Jack Johnson
You might remember, a couple weeks back, the trailer video for the “Undisputed” video series that the Kings’ video staff has been working on this season. Well, the first episode has now been released, and it centers around Jack Johnson. It’s the first of an eight-part series, and each video will highlight a different player. [...]
Johnson’s play has been on point(s)
As noted in yesterday’s discussions, a case could be made for Jack Johnson’s inclusion on the NHL All-Star team. The selection for defensemen isn’t all about scoring, of course, but Johnson does rank in the top six among NHL defensemen this season in points (31, tied for sixth) and assists (27, tied for fifth). Johnson [...]
The times, they have a-changed
There have been plenty of good-natured jokes about Jack Johnson buying meals and gifts for teammates after Johnson agreed to a seven-year contract extension on Saturday, but really, all sides have remained focused on the business at hand. Terry Murray wanted to make sure of that in a recent chat with Johnson… MURRAY: “I had [...]
`Dream pair’ might have to wait a while
Jack Johnson’s new seven-year contract extension with the Kings means that he will be around a while, and so will Drew Doughty. The question then, going forward, is, what does the on-ice future hold for each of the young defensemen? Should they play together, or be split up and help form two strong defensive pairings? [...]
Johnson postgame quotes
Jack Johnson’s postgame thoughts… (on the timetable of agreeing to his contract extension…) JOHNSON: “I think the end of October. We would meet periodically. It was actually kind of fun. It wasn’t any kind of burden at all. It was just going out and playing hockey every night, and trying to play well, and letting [...]
Details on Johnson’s contract
Jack Johnson’s new contract with the Kings will be a seven-year deal, with a salary-cap hit of approximately $4.3 million. Johnson will make $3.5 million in each of the first three years, starting next season, and then $5 million per year in each of the final four seasons.
Extension for Johnson?
ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun is reporting that the Kings are on the verge of a multi-year contract extension with Jack Johnson. When I get some details on this, I’ll definitely share them, but Pierre is definitely a guy to trust, and he says it’s six or seven years, in the range of $4-4.5 million per year. [...]
Johnson’s play is a big `plus’
Terry Murray had strong praise on Tuesday for all of the efforts of his defensemen in Monday’s victory over San Jose, but when asked about Jack Johnson, Murray had particularly kind words. Johnson had one assist, a plus-3 rating and was credited with a team-high five blocked shots as he played 25 minutes, 32 seconds, [...]
Johnson postgame quotes
Jack Johnson’s postgame thoughts… (on his goal, in his home state…) JOHNSON: “It was great. Obviously it means a lot. I’ve got a lot of friends and family, and my former coach in the stands, so it was great to be able to score in front of them and to get the fifth one here.” [...]
The Kings’ Michigan men return home
There’s not an official stat on this — that I know of — but the Kings probably lead the league in Michigan natives, so this is, in a sense, a homecoming for the Kings. Alec Martinez is a native of Rochester Hills — 25 miles north of Detroit — and will be playing in his [...]
Postgame notes/video (Dec. 9)
Some notes from last night’s game… – The Kings won their third consecutive game by beating Calgary 2-1 on Thursday night at Staples Center. – Under coach Terry Murray, the Kings had been 1-8 against Calgary and had totaled only 12 goals in those nine games. – Anze Kopitar scored the game-winning goal, his third [...]
Johnson, on the blocks
Following up on yesterday’s shot-blocking feature, I got a chance to catch up with Jack Johnson, who leads the Kings with 54 blocked shots this season. That’s a steep rise from last season, when Johnson had 86 blocked shots in 80 games, but Johnson said the rise isn’t necessarily by design… JOHNSON: “No, I’m not [...]
Positive reinforcement for Johnson
When a coach talks to a player on the ice, during practice, it can mean one of two things. It’s either a scolding or encouragement, and in the case of Terry Murray and Jack Johnson today, it was the latter. For a third consecutive day, the Kings spent significant practice time working on special teams [...]
Johnson's big minutes
Jack Johnson leads the Kings in ice time, at an average of 22 minutes, 37 seconds, which puts him eight seconds per game ahead of last season’s leader, Drew Doughty. That’s essentially a tie, but in Johnson’s case, it’s noteworthy, because his play seems to have taken a big step forward this season and because [...]
