New contracts, lines

News from practice: Jonathan Quick has signed a three-year contract extension worth $1.8 million per year. Davis Drewiske has signed a three-year contract extension worth $600,000 per year.

Scott Parse skated with Stoll and Purcell today, and likely will play that way tomorrow. Terry Murray said Justin Williams is out “another couple days” with his sore, um, lower body. Smyth-Kopitar-Simmonds and Frolov-Handzus-Brown remain intact. More quotes and notes soon…

    I like it!

  2. Dom says:

But…. is Quickie really worth 3 times a Drewsiske? OR: did Drewsiske get drewed? (yes, the ol’ verb game…. sorry).

  3. CanadianKing says:

Wow.. that is a steal for both players. If I were Quick, though, I would have waited until the end of the season. I think he could have gotten a little more.

All in all, amazing contracts signed by DL.

  4. DP says:

Good deal for Drewiski, he’s played very well so far this season. Quick is a little steep IMO, but if he’s your #1, than it looks about right.

Curious to see Parse play. Guess this means Lewis isn’t ready for top 6 duty.

  5. Cricket says:

If Quick gets back on game, that’s such a sweet deal for a winning goalie. Plus, if Bernier outplays him, he’ll be easy to trade with that number.

And whomever on here, forget who, was praising Drewiske for bringing as much to the team as Scuderi for much cheaper, good news huh?

  6. Bitter says:

If Quick sticks as a legit #1 NHLer that means we get him until he’s 27 at under 2 mil a year. A bargain. But what does this longer commitment to Quick say about Bernier’s future?

  7. CanadianKing says:

    Cricket,

I agree. I think Drewiske and Scuderi are very similar. Funny how there’s a $2.8 mil gap between the two.

  8. Bitter says:

Agree with Cricket. 1.8 for Quick is very reasonable but if the sh.. hits the fan, that’s a very cap friendly number in the event of a trade. Now I think that puts lots of pressure on Bernier.

  9. WWAMD says:

    Great singings! Good job Deano!

  10. Cynic says:

A STEAL for both these guys. Nice move to sign them early. I gotta believe the players like the front-end commitment to them as well, which is worth a discount I believe.

At 1.8/yr for Quick, even if Bernier does step in a few years from now, that’s not a bad price for a legit backup. I mean lots of NHL teams have paid plenty more for their backups.

  11. Belexes says:

quote – “If Quick sticks as a legit #1 NHLer that means we get him until he’s 27 at under 2 mil a year. A bargain. But what does this longer commitment to Quick say about Bernier’s future?”

absolutely nothing. it just means Quick is under Kings control for a longer period. If he plays well, terrific. If he slips, he will still be very easy to move. Nice job by DL.

  12. josh says:

anyone else notice how we signed him to this extension the day after he played a poor game? nice little tactice to get him signed cheaper while he has less confidence in his abilities.

  13. Cynic says:

    CKing-

I think Deano just paid for Scuderi’s contract with the Drewiskie signing.

  14. Cricket says:

    CanadianKing,

That’s right, you’re the guy. Astute observation on your part. Maybe the biggest difference, besides the crazy in-the-crease work Scuderi showcased again last night, is that Drewiskie takes a beating out there! First few games, got checked like crazy. Last night, slammed into the boards. Tough kid.

  15. Bitter says:

Signing a UFA is almost always the most expensive way to get a player. But I still wonder who can or will put up numbers like Quincy.

  16. UtahKingsFan says:

Did Scuderi get credited for the 2 saves he made at the goaline? He made some bad plays but overall he is a good defender and once the team gets used to each other the Kings are going to be a force to be reckoned with.

  17. Johnny says:

the salary between Drewiskie and Scuderi make perfect sense.

Scuderi- 30yrs old,5th nhl season,Cup Champ, and most of all experience!

Drewiskie- 24yrs old, undrafted, only played 17 games last yr so this is his 1st nhl season.

Scuderi may not be the best d-man on the team right now but the season is young and he still needs to adjust with his new friends and system. but he is solid and worth every penny

  18. Belexes says:

-quote – “Signing a UFA is almost always the most expensive way to get a player. But I still wonder who can or will put up numbers like Quincy.”

Uhh, let me see…..maybe Ryan Smyth?
Quincy would be filling Drews’ spot in the D if he were still here, but we all are glad he’s not because Smyth has been a monster.

  19. Kevin Y says:

The reason why Scuderi got so much more than Drewiske will get? He’s got a ring.

Then again, George Parros has one as well, so..

  20. Belexes says:

lol, clarification – Quincy would be filling Drewiske’s spot, not Doughty’s.

  21. JDM says:

    Josh,

I highly doubt last nights game meant much to the signings. They probably had those numbers for a few days now.

  22. Jack the Lad says:

    Belexes,

Just curious, did you get your name from the Kansas song?

  23. Belexes says:

    Yes, I did

  24. Jack the Lad says:

Wow, that’s cool. It’s not often you find a Kansas reference these days.

  25. Bitter says:

I know Smyth is going to put up some good numbers but Quincy was an asset on the PP. He got a lot of shots on net. I’m hoping Johnson can put up some points.

  26. Belexes says:

I am very closely associated with the band

  27. Bitter says:

I know Smyth is going to put up some good numbers but Quincy was an asset on the PP. He got a lot of shots on net. I’m hoping Johnson can put up some points too

  28. Jack the Lad says:

    Belexes,

Even cooler, what do you do for them?

Sorry, I know this is supposed to be a Kings blog site.

    Go Kings!!!!

  29. Belexes says:

I know what your saying Bitter, Quincy was good for this club last season, but we traded him when he held good value, and brought in a strong offensive presence.

  30. wavesinair says:

Wait, so is Parse playing right wing? Anyone?

  31. Parse is a LW. I can only hope that Purcell goes back to his natural spot at RW.

    Smyth-Kopi-Simmonds
    Fro-Zus-Brown
    Parse-Stoll-Lewis
    Ivanans-Richardson-Harrold

That would be my guess for tomorrow night’s lineup. I can’t imagine Lewis gets another game after Murray benched him in the third last night.

  32. THEROCKNROLL80S says:

I agree with the Drewiske signing (what a steal), but disagree with the Quick signing. Drewiske is a solid top four defensemen who rarely makes a mistake. You know someone is doing something right when that someone, Drewiske is leading the Kings in +/-. As for Quick, it is no secret that is playing rather poorly so far this year. With Ersberg on the team and Bernier and Zatkoff in the system, I would have waited till this year was over to decide whether or not Quick was worthy of a contract extention. At this stage in his career, I am not convinced that he is our #1 goalie of the future or a #1 goalie in the NHL period.

  33. wavesinair says:

LOL JDM, yet he’s in your lineup! Mistake of course. Speaking of mistakes, they list Parse as a RW on the old website…

  34. Hah, whoops. Yeah, that was supposed to be Purcell.

Weird that he is listed at RW. I’m sure he has played there but I was always under the impression he was one of, well, one LW scorer we had in the system.

  35. wavesinair says:

Everywhere I look, he’s listed as a right winger… so what’s the deal? Who knows the real deal?

  36. khanon says:

Anybody know if the Drewiski contract is a one way or two way contract?

  37. He being Parse.

    I didn’t get enough sleep last night…

  38. Big A says:

I’m guessing it’s a one-way contract. Can’t see DD signing this early and for such a moderate amount on a two-way. Could be wrong though.

  39. Big A says:

    err, meant “modest” amount ^.

  40. Matt George says:

    Simmmaaayyyy!!!

  41. kingsfan2316 says:

Quick will recover and become a solid #1, he’s got an unbelievable teacher in billy ranford whom is from my hometown of red deer, ab, just give him some time guys, billy is a stanley cup champ who will be an asset to the young stopper!

  42. anthony says:

    These signings are impressive.
I’m in the majority with this one.

  43. Kevin Kinkor says:

Lower Body injury that they can’t exactly talk about and only takes a few days to recover from…sounds like he took a puck to the….and the soreness is too hard to play with.

  44. Dan H. says:

Good news on both counts. I really liked the PP with Doughty and JMFJ out there. Seemed more fluid and I wasn’t worried about someone getting back!

  45. Iroqnroll says:

I think the Quick signing was a coin toss, lock him up early in the season for a good/fair price, if he gets back to his “A” game and leads us into the playoffs, would have cost us more to re-sign him. If he dosent pick it up, it’s not a bad price for a solid back-up.

Drewiske at 600k is great, I’m happy with both signings.

  46. [...] -Los Angeles signed defenseman Davis Drewiske ($600,000 per season) and goaltender Jonathan Quick ($1.8 million per season) to three-year contract extensions. [...]

  47. McDonald says:

Drewiske signing is great. Quick signing is pretty good. He’ll start this season, and i guess we’ll see about next season. I think everyone can agree that Bernier will be making a hell of a push in the next year or two. He’s certainly playing awesome in Manchester…At the LEAST Quick will certainly be one of the best back-ups in the league.
