Postgame notes (10/13)

— Special-teams play has been up and down for the Kings this season, and Wednesday it was down. The Kings went 1 for 7 on the power play (they were 7 for 21 entering the game) and 1 for 3 on the penalty kill, with one of the Rangers’ goals coming on a 5-on-3 power play. The Kings had killed 10 consecutive penalties entering the game.

— The Kings outshot the Rangers 36-21, including 10-1 in the third period. The Rangers’ only shot in the third? Marian Gaborik’s goal, 4:22 in, which gave the Rangers the 4-2 lead.

— Erik Ersberg allowed four goals on 21 shots in his season debut. Jonathan Quick will be in goal Thursday.

— It was a mixed night for the former Kings. Brian Boyle scored his first goal of the season, which ended up being the game-winner. Sean Avery played 10 minutes and, at one point, appeared to seriously injure his arm, but later returned.

— Dustin Brown led the Kings in shots on goal (five) and hits (four).

— The Kings won 27 of 50 faceoffs (54 percent).

— Jack Johnson played a game-high 23 minutes, 51 seconds. Ryan Smyth led all Kings forwards in ice time at 22:43.

— Thursday’s morning skate has been called off, as is fairly typical in a back-to-back games situation.
