Murray postgame quotes

Terry Murray’s postgame thoughts…

(on the game…)
MURRAY: “The scoring was hard to come by. Howard was unbelievable. I think, on some of those scoring opportunities, we might not have been ready. I think there were a couple opportunities where we came into the slot — Brownie had one, Simmer had one there late in the third period — and missed the puck. I think it was just a surprise to them, and that’s just being ready, being intense on it. But we had a lot of play around the net. You’ve got to give the goaltender a ton of credit. He bounced back after a game in Anaheim the other night that I’m sure he wasn’t real pleased with, and shut us down tonight.”

(on a possible letup after the tying goal, and not getting a shot after that…)
MURRAY: “Well, I wasn’t counting, really, after that. The play at the end, they make a strong play on it. They beat us off the boards and took it to the net. It’s unfortunate. It’s a very tough game. I hope it’s not a game that comes back to haunt us later on, as we get down to the end of the season. Even to get a point out of this would have been real important.”

(on giving up two goals late in periods, and whether it’s a concern…)
MURRAY: “No. We’ve played lots of one-goal game. We’ve played really well in the one-goal games. That’s just the way it ended up here tonight. There was a faceoff at the end of the first, and a play where they just made a strong play off the boards.”

(on whether the team felt frustration, after so many shots not going in…)
MURRAY: “That’s what we want. We want to keep shooting. We’re encouraging that. It’s shot mentality. It’s something that we’ve been pushing since the start of the year. Get more pucks to the net. If you end up with 50-plus shots on net here tonight, that’s a great thing. We want to continue to build on it. You’re not going to score on 50 percent of them. You’re trying to just win the game. You’re just looking to get a couple goals here tonight. You go through games where the goaltenders are the difference in the game, and it so happened that that was the case here tonight.”

(on what he said to the team after the game…)
MURRAY: “I didn’t go in there.”

(on limiting the Red Wings’ scoring chances…)
MURRAY: “That’s because of what was going on at the other end. There were strong decisions through the middle of the ice. We did a good job on the forecheck, on the cycle. We gave up some stuff there, on the one power play we had. They had two or three 2-on-1 odd rushes. They just kept coming. I wasn’t able to keep count of it. Overall, against a team that’s a pretty good offensive-minded team, we did OK against them tonight.”
