Murray postgame quotes

Terry Murray’s postgame thoughts…

(on two consecutive quality wins…)
MURRAY: “The game in Minnesota was a big test for us. Lots of reasons for us not to come out and play the way we did. Today it was against one of the premier teams in the game, the top offensive team in the league, and we had to come out with the right attitude and play intelligently, play smart away from the puck. We did that for a while. Second period, I thought we got a little careless with the puck and gave them too many opportunities. Thank God for Quick here today. He played outstanding in the second period and had lots of pressure back at him again late in the third period. It was a much needed two points, a real character win and I think it all goes to Jonathan Quick here today.”

(on responding from the poor second period…)
MURRAY: “Well, we knew we had to be better. They come out and outshoot us 13-3 in the second period, and we probably gave them 10 shots through poor puck management, coming out of our zone or in the middle of the ice. You talk about it between periods, but the players themselves have to rally and understand that there’s a need to pick it up, change things, and be better.”

(on the penalty kill…)
MURRAY: “The PK has been really good for the last 20 games, probably. They’ve done a tremendous job blocking, sacrificing, blocking shots and, again, a lot of it goes to the goaltender. The save percentage in the penalty-kill situations is much improved. But the 5-on-3, less is best sometimes. Just get big bodies in the shot lanes and discourage them from shooting. The veterans did a great job in that area tonight.”

(on Richardson’s play on the game-winning goal…)
MURRAY: “I was surprised he stayed on his feet, because he took a big hit from Ovechkin on the play. He hung in there and did a great job finding Zeus off that weak side. But from the start, just coming into the zone with speed and his foot quickness and getting the puck into the right areas, staying with it, it was obviously a tremendous play, to see him dig in. That’s the way he’s been playing for me, in my mind, the last 20 games.”

(on playing Ovechkin…)
MURRAY: “He has the ability to step up and take over a game himself, which he tried to do in the second period. He had some speed coming through the middle of the ice and, wow, he’s a dangerous guy. We did a good job. Doughty was real good against him, Scuderi. There was a lot of stick-on-puck, which made him hold the puck at a little bit more of a severe angle, which gives Quick that opportunity to get re-positioned for a different look. But he is a tremendous, very exciting player.”
