March 23 postgame quotes: Winnipeg

Paul Maurice, on a good start for Winnipeg, and when he saw the game start to turn:
Well we had some awfully long defensive zone shifts and we had one at 1:48 and had to take a timeout. They got in our back end pretty good and started piling up some penalties.

Maurice, on his biggest concern after the loss:
Well we’ve got to find somebody to get in front of it in the shooting lane.

Maurice, on whether he can update Dustin Byfuglien’s status:
Nothing yet, sorry, no.

Maurice, on the Jets not being able to “stop the bleeding” in the third period:
Yeah, I mean, it’s 2-2 going into the htird so you’ve battled fairly hard on the road and then we just got into the box and that was the end of it.

Maurice, on whether this game is a point of frustration when trying to get rid of bad habits:
Yeah, both the penalties in that third period – we’re in behind it, right? We can’t react off a shot to the net and we’re in behind it and it’s not a matter of laziness. We just got into tough spots that we weren’t physically able to get on the right side of the puck. Too strong on it.

Blake Wheeler, on a good start for Winnipeg, and when he saw the game start to turn:
I mean, it’s 2-2 after two periods in a tough building against a tough team. So we gave ourselves an opportunity to win the game, just got into penalty trouble in the third.

Wheeler, on what the Kings were doing well on the power play:
I didn’t really look at what they were doing well. We just didn’t do a good enough job getting into shot lanes. We were just kind of out of sync, running around a little bit too much and they were composed and took the shots when we got them and we just weren’t able to get in front of them.

Mathieu Perreault, on a good start for Winnipeg, and when he saw the game start to turn:
Yeah they had a good push late in the second and then they scored a couple power play goals that kind of turned the game over and yeah, they took over the game from the third period.

Perreault, on whether he could “feel things starting to turn” as the game went on:
A little bit. Like you said, we had a good start. We had some good chances, too. I think Blake had one right in the slot. Bishop made a good save and then when they had their chances they were both put in and that’s the difference in this game.

Perreault, on the Jets needing more discipline in their game:
Yeah, yeah. We’ve talked about that all year. Obviously our PK has been kind of struggling and if you’re in the box a lot it’s definitely not helping the team so yeah we’ve got to stay out of the box if we want to have any chance of winning games.

Perreault, on whether the Jets were playing shorthanded too much in order to get chances at 5-on-5:
Yeah, no, not a whole lot. A couple of good chances but we didn’t create a whole lot. We’re going to have to find a way to get the puck deep. I think we turned it over a little too much today in the neutral zone and this is not our game at all so if we can go back to getting pucks deep and working their D and getting pucks to the point and shots it’ll give us a better chance.

Patrick Laine, on where the game started to turn:
I don’t know. I think they just played well. I think we started well in the first period but then kind of, our game kind of changed and just too many penalties and they scored three power play goals and one shorthanded so our special teams need to be better.

Laine, on whether the Jets were playing shorthanded too much in order to get chances at 5-on-5:
Yeah of course. When everybody’s taking penalties and taking a lot it’s something the guys are not getting on the ice so I think that’s hard for everybody but I think we just need to battle through and hopefully we can score a couple of goals on 5-on-5.

Laine, on what he saw on his power play goal:
Nothing. I just try to shoot every puck but yeah I think they’re D blocked it and it went from the boards and from goalie’s skate. I don’t know so I think I’ll just take it.
