February 22 postgame quotes: Campbell and Hensick

Jack Campbell, on the team’s success tonight and what led to the win:
I just thought we played a really complete 60 minutes all around. Our forwards played great, our D played great. When I had to make some stops I did but also our D and forwards helped me out, too. Just a complete team effort and it’s a really good win by our hockey team.

Campbell, on the Reign’s game evolving:
When we buy into what we know works for us, we have a lot of success. It’s just sometimes we get away from that and then we drop a couple games but I think we’ve been a pretty resilient team at responding. We haven’t gone into any sort of crazy losing streak. We just need to be a little bit more consistent to get those longer winning streaks. But I really like our group, we have some guys out of the lineup, other guys step in and play great and it’s just really good to see.

Campbell, on whether it’s crazy to think that this is his 2nd shutout after all the success he’s had:
Yeah, I mean, it’s just the way it is. It’s tough. You get to this level and shutouts are tough. I think Budes has a bunch last year but that’s impressive. Couple times they’ve scored with a minute or two left in the game. [Reporter: Yeah, just last week.] Yeah, just shows sixty minutes for everybody. Any time you get a shutout it’s just a great game by the whole team. It was just nice tonight to do that and more importantly get the win.

Campbell, on whether there’s any point in the game where he starts to think about the shutout:
Not necessarily about the shutout but they’re just a really explosive offensive team with a couple really high-end players. So, you take a couple deep breaths and refocus and we scored to make it three-nothing and it kind of feels like we have it, but that’s where refocusing and knowing that they can turn on the switch at any point and get some offensive chances. I thought everybody did a great job at playing til the final buzzer.

Campbell, on the Reign’s early power play goal and how it helped him in:
I think Hajter really got the boys fired up today in pregame video with a nice motivational speech and the boys responded well and got a goal right away. Sometimes you need that. Any time the power play scores right in the beginning of the game, or whether it’s the end of the game, it’s big. I thought our power play’s been doing a great job for us.

T.J. Hensick, on what it means to him to reach 40 points:
Feels good. Feels like it’s been a bounce-back year offensively for me. Last year wasn’t where I wanted to be obviously. Had a good break there on that power play and their D-men shooting off me to get in all alone. Obviously gives you a little bit of confidence for the rest of the game. Felt good. It was a big win for us. Soupy played well and to get a shutout is big. [Reporter: Stutts said he was gonna kill ya for losing the draw but you were able to recover.] (Laughs) Yeah, I lose the draw, it works itself out. It’s not how we planned but it was a power play goal, something we haven’t had lately, like I said, gives a little confidence. We had couple other chances there on the power play but to get one feels good and hopefully gets us going for the weekend.

Hensick, on what the veteran group has done to revamp its game and lead:
We had a meeting, I don’t know if it was a week ago, 10 days ago with Stuttsy about the older guys stepping up. Obviously we’re missing some guys, key guys, but between me Cres, Backs, Sutts, we had to step up with guys like Vinny, Teddy, Merschy out. Feels good to help the team win, the three of us. I think we’ve all played integral parts the last couple games. It’s expected of us. We’ve got to make sure we’re doing it every night. Sometimes you need a kick in the butt, which is what Stuttsy gave us, seven, 10 days ago and you’ve got to respond. We’ve all responded I think over the last week or so.

Hensick, on what Campbell’s brought to the team during his streak and this shutout:
Yeah, he’s been phenomenal for us. To play that many games in a row without a break has been huge. He seems to bring it every night. His consistency level’s been great for us. We’re extremely confident obviously when he’s in net and good for him. I met him this summer actually, we skated, we have the same agent. I got to know him this summer a little bit and he’s a great kid. He’s bouncing back this year obviously with the trade. He’s looking forward to the chance to take advantage of the opportunity. Like I said, he’s a good person and he works hard so we’re happy for him and we’re glad to play in front of him. Like I said, it comes down to being confident in front of him. He made some great saves tonight, he keeps [us] in games. He seems to be making that key save when we need it and like I said, it’s a good feeling right now and hopefully we continue to go.

Hensick, on whether there’s a time in the game where the team wanted to buckle down and help Campbell get the shutout:
Yeah, seven or eight minute mark someone said something on the bench. I think you’re all aware of it. You want to play for him as well he’s played for us. You want to make sure you can try and get that shutout for him. And I thought we did a good job of limiting their chances. They had that power play late but we shut the door. It feels good to get Soupy a shutout. He’s well deserved of it and hopefully they can give him a day off tomorrow because he’s earned it.
