February 7 postgame quotes: Kopitar, Doughty

Anze Kopitar, on a 1-0 deficit after the 1st period turning in to a 5-0 loss:
Yeah I mean, you know I think our start was good. We had chances right away, I had about 3 in the first 5, 10 minutes so it could’ve been a lot different game but that’s not how we’ve got to look at this one. The 2nd in a row where we’re getting scored on 5 times and obviously you’re not going to win many games if you give up 5 goals and we’ve got to clean that up.

Kopitar, on whether Budaj’s play was any different:
No. Well you look at the goals, there’s odd-man rushes, there’s breakaways, 2-on-1s. Even in Washington, I mean there was a 2-on-0 in Washington, there was a couple of guys where the guy was buy himself in front of the net so nothing different on his part I don’t think but we’ve just got to clean the game up. [So he was kind of put in a bad position in a lot of those goals?] Yep.

Kopitar, on what’s led to the defensive breakdowns:
Yeah. Obviously we’re not on our game right now and when we’re not on our game we’re giving away rushes and giving up odd-man rushes like that. Again we’ve got to clean that up, we pride ourselves to be a good checking team and we’re just not showing it.

Drew Doughty, on getting outscored 10-0 over the last two games:
I think we’re pretty concerned. That’s not how we play hockey. We don’t give up 5 goals. That’s not the way our team has been taught to play and we take a lot of pride in not giving up goals and when you’re giving up breakaways, 2-on-1s, 2-on-2s, 3-on-2s, we’re not used to doing that so we need to pick it up real quick because that’s quite embarrassing to lose 10-0 in two games.

Doughty, on whether Budaj has been put in bad situations in goal the last two games:
Yeah, yeah. Definitely. Like I said, it’s a breakaway, those deflections when we have 3-on-2s, 2-on-2s, we shouldn’t be giving up those and those deflections are hard to reach for him so obviously he would like to come up with a few more saves but at the same time we’re putting him in terrible situations and leaving him out there to dry so it’s more on the players in front of him.

Doughty, on what’s changed the last two games that’s led to more odd-man rushes against:
I don’t know. A couple bad reads on today’s goals. Some bad line changes both in today’s game and last game. It just comes down to the will to compete. We have to be playing desperate hockey right now, all the players in here, we have to play with more desperation because we have an opportunity to get in the top 3 in our division and we’re pissing it away right now.

Doughty, on whether tomorrow’s off-day will help re-focus the team:
You know, I think it’s good. Maybe not everyone would agree with me but I think it’ll be good to kind of just get together with the boys and kind of hang out a little bit and not talk too much about hockey and just about life and kind of get our heads away from for it a little bit and then come ready to win a game in Florida.
