January 21 postgame quotes: Doughty, Carter, Lewis

Drew Doughty, on whether New York’s power play success was due to the Islanders or poor play by the Kings:
Probably honestly a little bit of both. We would have liked to take away those chances, not let them… it was the same guy twice if I was not mistaken, Lee. You can’t let him get the stick on the tip and on the other one you can’t let him get the rebound, but we looked to our PK to step up in those moments and kill the penalties. And usually they do but tonight they didn’t.

Doughty, on LA with 28 shots on goal through two, but none that were really dangerous:
No, I agree with you. We did have some really, really good chances and Berube made some really good saves. There were maybe four or five of them, but like you said there was 28 shots and I’d say a good 15 of them were just easy saves for him with guys not in front and guys not going into the net. We got to look to shoot more rebounds and tips and stuff like that in order to score in this league. It’s good to get shots, I’m not saying don’t get shots. But we’d like to have more quality shots definitely.

Doughty, on whether the Kings had a slow start:
The first shift was good, I thought the first couple shifts were good, and then obviously we let them get the first goal and the second goal and then we were chasing the game from there on out. You know, you’d like when you tie it up 2-2 we have all the momentum on our side. It sucks to give up a goal right after that.

Doughty, on whether New York’s early goal in the first put the Kings in a bind:
No, I still feel like we came back and tied it again. I didn’t feel like our team deflated or anything like that, we just weren’t able to put the puck in the net after that. I wish I didn’t take that penalty that was stupid, but I didn’t know what to do with it and it kind of shot us in the foot there.

Jeff Carter, on losing momentum after a good start to the third period:
Yeah. I mean, I thought we had a really good start to the game. Did a lot of good things except put the puck in the net. That’s been an issue for us all year. You know, we get one or two in that first it could be a different game, right? Showed a lot to battle back but we come up with nothing so it’s tough. I think we did a lot of good things but at the end of the day you’ve got to win games and last night we lost ground. I don’t know what happened tonight but we’ve got to get these next three games. We’re starting to drop back too much so we’ve got to keep her going.

Carter, on whether the team becomes more aware of the playoff picture at this part of the season:
I think you have to. I mean, we’ve got to play desperate hockey right now. We need all the points we can get. We’re going to need all hands on deck here and we’ve got to get rolling. We’ve got to clean up a few things and start putting up some points.

Trevor Lewis, on LA not being able to mount a comeback:
(recording started with interview in progress)…manages to score tonight, I think we’ve just got to bear down on that and find ways to win those games.

Lewis, on the success of the Islanders’ power play against LA:
They got shots through and a guy in front banging ’em home so I mean, I think that was their focus. Just get shots through and bang ’em home and get the greasy one. You get in the lanes or I don’t know, we’ll have to look at it.

Lewis, on what he saw happening in the third period:
Yeah I think we got back in to it there and finally buried a couple then they get a quick one there and take the momentum back. Still, after that, I think we had some chances to tie it up. Like I said, we’ve got to find ways to win these types of games.
