October 9 postgame quotes: Brown, Toffoli

Dustin Brown, on aspects of the loss to Arizona:
Turnovers were the difference for us, and they had a couple goals that I thnk were off our players, but like I said, good teams get to create their own bounces. We had a lot of really good chances in and around the net. Smith played well for them, but I don’t think they generated a whole lot on their own. It was more off of our turnovers.

Brown, on the level of concern for the team’s control of the puck:
I think it’s just bringing awareness to it at this point. We know what we have to do. Now, again, everyone understands we had a lot of good things happen in and around the net offensively, and it was coming out of our zone – we had two turnovers, and it ended up in our net. It’s one of those things, it’s not like we’re sitting here not knowing. We’re talking about it and trying to clean it up.

Brown, on being aggressive around the net but not scoring:
Well, he played well for them. If you look at our last game, it was a lot different. We weren’t even in and around the blue paint enough. I think, again, we have to bear down on our chances. There were a couple chances there in front where you’re battling and trying to whack it in the net. Some nights you score five or six of those that just go find a way into the net, and tonight there were a lot of chances. At the end there, me and Carts were both chopping the puck into a square out there, and it just wouldn’t find a way into the net. If you do that consistently, you’re going to score a lot of goals. [Reporter: And those are kinds of shots that go in for you guys, and it’s just not happening at the moment.] It’s, I think, league-wide. You turn on the sports highlights, it’s all nice goals, but the majority of NHL goals are junk goals in front of the net off of rebounds. We had our chances, and like I said, we need to continue getting in and around that blue paint, because that’s what makes us successful.

Tyler Toffoli, on whether there is anything fundamentally wrong with the team’s play, or whether there are little things that have added up:
I think a couple of those goals tonight were kind of unfortunate. The first one kind of bounces up. I didn’t even see it – I think it might have bounced over Quickie. That’s just not the way games should start. I thought we played well. I thought we worked hard and stuck to the way we wanted to play, but we just didn’t get the bounces we needed tonight.

Toffoli, on generating looks with Jeff Carter and other players he skated with:
I think everybody in this room’s played with each other, to be honest. I think we all know what each player kind of brings, and we were just trying to find a way to get going, and like I said, trying to find a way to get a bounce and get some momentum our way and scoring some goals.

Toffoli, on the team getting the puck into hard areas:
I think tonight was a little better. I thought Smith played well and made some real big saves, a couple that he didn’t see that kind of just hit him, and a couple just straight up good saves. We’ve got to keep working and stay with our game and find a way here.

Toffoli, on whether the team feels “out of sync”:
There were times, like I said earlier, just a couple bounces here and there, and a couple little mistakes that we’ve got to tighten up, and just get back to the way we need to play and find a way to get some wins here.
