March 21 postgame quotes: Greene, Brown, Gaborik

Matt Greene, on the loss to Vancouver:
They’re a team that’s going to cycle, that’s going to get chances. We just have to make sure we limit their [chances]. If they’re heavy chances, then that’s it. Played a pretty tight game, pretty tight game through the first and second. We gave up that late one in the third. We’ve got to be able to kill those penalties off and that’s it.

Greene, on how Vancouver generated 42 shots on goal:
They’re a high offensive team, they’re going to get chances. We’ve just got to weather the storm when they do and make sure we limit it and make sure they’re coming from outside.

Greene, on whether there’s a tough schedule to end the regular season:
Nope, we’ve got a good schedule. Just be ready to play every game, every game is a big one and just get points and keep moving up the standings, keep pace with these guys and hopefully gain some ground.

Greene, on currently being out of a playoff spot:
Well, that’s the position we put ourselves in. We’ve got to make sure we get back in and play hard and try to get every point we can right now.

Greene, on whether there is a reason they have had some trouble holding onto leads:
We’ve got to score goals. We’ve got to score goals, we’ve got to get chances and that’s everybody, that’s everybody throughout the lineup. We need goals at this time of the year and we’ve got to play good defensively. That’s it.

Dustin Brown, on whether there was a lack of discipline in their game:
It’s part of our game, it’s just a fine line. I think it’s one of those things of hard penalties we’re alright with. We can kill those and I don’t really know what the penalties were. I don’t really pay much attention, unless it gets to that point we were last year where we’re taking five, six penalties a game. Our penalty kill is something we can rely on. Again, we’ll kill hard penalties.

Brown, on whether he was happy with the team’s play at even strength:
I think we need more shots, more… we’re really good along the walls. We had a lot of possession time, but we have to get to get into the scoring areas a little bit better and a little quicker. That’s the offensive side of things and that’s what we’ve got to do.

Brown, on the tight playoff race:
It’s not a given that you get into the playoffs. You’ve got to work for it and we’ve struggled at times this year but our confidence, our belief hasn’t wavered. We’re still in control of our own destiny. We play a lot of these teams that we’re battling with. I think people expect us to be there, but we have to earn it.

Brown, on what led Vancouver to generate 42 shots on goal:
I couldn’t really tell you. I don’t know what you want me to say. From an X’s and O’s standpoint, probably the one thing, especially early in the game, I thought we weren’t as clean coming through the neutral zone. As a result, they’re a transition team and that’s where I think they generated a lot of their scoring chances were off the neutral zone transition or neutral zone, period.

Brown, on the challenging schedule to end the regular season:
I think it’s fair to say that we have a hard schedule, but that’s what the NHL is all about. Especially down the stretch, it’s one of those things if we deserve to be in the playoffs we’ll find ways to win games. Like I said, our confidence and our belief in ourselves hasn’t wavered. Again, a couple months ago, everyone was saying we’d have a chance and we’re still sitting here with a chance. So now it’s getting to that time, it’s been that time, where we have to find ways to rattle off some wins here.

Marian Gaborik, on whether there was a change between the second and third periods:
Obviously they had the advantage on the power play, scored there. Bottom line, we can’t win with one goal. We just had a lot of chances to put the game away, but we just didn’t capitalize. So we need to work on this. Going on the road, we need to score more goals. That’s the bottom line, and without sacrificing our defense. We need to play the right way, but try to get pucks on goal and create some… put the pucks on net, into the net.

Gaborik, on whether something changed in their gameplan:
We did it most of the game, and then it kind of drifted away a little bit. They had that seven-minute power play there, so it kind of took the wind from us a little bit. We were pushing at the end there, just couldn’t score that deciding goal.
